Introduction

1996 is indeed an excellent Barolo vintage, showing a lot better than the 1993 lesser vintage.
And for Brunello, 1999 - a year of superb balance.

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune

    Revisiting this wine again from a new bottle.
    More intense fruit flavours of pineapple with toasted oak. More in line with my first tasting rather than the most recent previous tasting.
    Bottle variation or maybe the previous bottle was off.

  • 2006 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Vigneto Brich Ronchi 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    Aired in decanter for about 1 hour.
    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of toasted oak, red cherry, floral violets. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol, dry puckery high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of toasted oak, dark red cherries. Long finish.
    Very good quality. Potential is there. Still very young and tight at this point. This will improve with further ageing. Re-explore again after 5+ years.

  • 1996 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of earth, roses, and integrated oak. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, puckery but fine high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of nicely integrated oak, red cherry, red plums, earth. Long finish.
    Very good quality. Well-made Barolo in a modern style. Nicely integrated but not enough tertiary note development yet. Re-explore again in 5 years. Ticks all the boxes technical wise and has the stuffing to age. However, drinking this side by side with the 1996 Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala, this seems to lack the soul/character to match up.

  • 1993 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of earth, soy sauce, tea leaves, floral rose. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol, rounded medium tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of soy sauce, tarry earth, tea leaves, and sour red cherries. Medium+ finish.
    2 hours into the session and this was fading, with the fruit disappearing.
    Very good quality Barolo from Aldo Conterno in a lesser vintage. Nicely drinking now on pop and pour. Drink up, will not improve further with age.

  • 1996 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 96 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Aired in decanter for 1.5 hours before drinking.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with a lovely bouquet of earth, sweet soy sauce, spice, floral rose. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, bright high acidity, medium alcohol, well-rounded medium+ tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, tarry earth, sweet soy sauce, spice. Long finish.
    Outstanding quality Barolo from Aldo Conterno in a very good vintage. Very nice drinking now. Also feels like it could still develop a little more over the next 5 years.
    Clear winner against a 1996 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco and a 1993 Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala.

  • 1999 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino 95 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Slow-oxed in bottle for about 2 hours and then poured into decanter for a short while before drinking. Tasted blind.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of toasted oak, earth, leather, red fruit. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red plums, dark red cherries, sweet licorice, slight leather and earth. Overall extremely well-balanced. Long finish.
    Outstanding quality Brunello. 1999 is indeed a superb vintage with very well balanced Brunelli. This still feels like it could improve with further age. Any remaining bottles should be revisited in another 3-5 years.
