A Chinese dinner

Introduction

Went for a Chinese dinner with three other couple to a place that does not charge corkage. Each couple brought 2 wines. We had not defined a theme but in hindsight for the reds it could have been, hot vintages..

  • 2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne 93 Points

    France, Champagne

    Pale yellow. Fine and accurately drawn palate with citrus, white fruit and brioche. Fine mousse. Very nice

  • 2007 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Romanée St. Vivant 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

    Ruby. Intense aromatics of red fruit and flowers, then more earthy on the mid palate. Long finish. Wonderful

  • 2003 Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco Toscana IGT 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    Dark garnet. Interesting herbal nose, ripe dark and borderline burned fruit, liquorice, tar. Medium tannins. Medium finish. Very typical 2003, and not a vintage/style I enjoy much.

  • 2003 Château Duhart-Milon

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Double decanted 75cl bottle briefly, and took to restaurant. Consistent notes with the magnum opened a few months ago. Great success for Duhart Milon in this difficult vintage, and in my eyes the best deal among 2003 Bordeaux.

  • 1997 Barnett Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District

    PnP. Still a healthy garnet. Dark sweet fruit, earth, some coffee. Good structure with well integrated tannins. Medium finish. Will not improve but should hold up for another 5-10 years.

  • 2003 Adega Cooperativa de Borba Vinho Regional Alentejano Garrafeira 92 Points

    Took us a while to figure out what the grapes are here. All local varieties but the profile reminds me of a very nice Bordeaux (blend) with a bit more of herbs in it. Good balance and structure. Medium finish. Excellent QPR as usual from Portugal

  • 2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Dark garnet. While this has the expected generous dark fruit and weight from the hot vintage, it maintains an impressive and surprising freshness. Drinking well now but will obviously last. 93-94

  • 2007 Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Sergio Zenato Riserva 90 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    Dark garnet. Big and heavy wine: 16.5% alcohol, big and sweet fruit, heavy on the palate. Lots of substance and a medium finish. An interesting contrast to the 2007 Beaucastel since this Valpolicella entirely lacks freshness. While not a bad wine per se it is not my cup of tea
