A focus on Nuits-Saint-Georges

Introduction
We had been long overdue for a Burgundy dinner and I wanted to focus in on a specific village. This was a great way for us to hone in some more and we worked around NSG to get a better handle on the village.

Everything came off well and this was a great way to dig deeper into Nuits-Saint-Georges. I also had to remind myself to use Aquitaine more often as the venue was perfect on a cool Thursday night.
2005 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale Blanc 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru
Nose: The nose is very aromatic and open with peaches, oranges, creams, pears, and quince with a real attractive underlying minerality. There is excellent depth and it was fully revved up with just a small bit of air.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity. The feel is very well balanced and refined with peaches, quince, oranges, creams, and a real nice mineral streak that shows up on the back end.
Overall: This was a great way to start off the dinner. I've not had too many NSG Blancs and this was a real fun one to get my toes wet on that side of NSG.

1976 Domaine Machard de Gramont Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Hauts Pruliers 90 Points

Nose: This took a slight bit to rev up as there was a decent soy content at first. But, once it got going, there was real beauty with violets, damp earth, red cherries, cranberries, leather, and a touch of worchestershire sauce.
Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity. The acidity was a bit of a teeter-toter and it had an astringency as well. While there was an astringency to the acidity, there was a real refinement to the tones with violets, damp earth, leather, cranberries, and some worschestershire sauce.
Overall: This was a lot of fun. This wasn't just a study in how a wine ages. There was clearly life and lift to it along with a way about that really drew you in.

1993 Fernand Lécheneaut et Fils (Philippe et Vincent) Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles 90 Points

Nose: There is a more perfumed and aromatic take to the nose with red florals, dark red berries, spice notes, earthen tones, cranberries, violets, and dark red fruits. This did lack a slight bit of depth as the tones more lay on the surface.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. The feel has a feminine-style to it with red florals, earthen tones, cranberries, violets, dark red fruits, and a touch of incense on the back end.
Overall: This had a real lovely side to it for a while until it started to fade a bit. There was a more understated nature to the wine that I really liked.

1996 Dominique Laurent Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 91 Points

Nose: There is a real attractive earthy base to the nose with dark red cherries, violets, raspberries, dark spices, cranberries, earth notes, and a touch of leather. There is excellent depth to this with real balance and perfume that comes with age.
Taste: Medium bodied with tart medium+ acidity. There is still a slight bit of tannin left and the acidity is certainly noticeable. At the same time, there is excellent balance with dark red cherries, cranberries, earth tones, leather, and some raspberries.
Overall: This was drinking beautifully. There was discussion about how it felt like whatever oak there was early in its life has no resolved. Like many other 96s, this does seem like a marathon runner of a wine and one that can develop for a good while longer.

2006 Dominique Laurent Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

Nose: There is a marked intensity and toastiness to the nose that the 96 didn't have along with dark red cherries, plums, some cranberries, licorice, spice, and a touch of earth. The nose almost leans new world and the oak influence is there(but it isn't so much woody notes).
Taste: Medium/Full bodied with medium/high acidity and some chewy tannins. The structure has a coarseness to it that is showing off its youth along with toast notes, dark red cherries, spice tones, cranberries, and a hint of earthiness.
Overall: If this were blind, I may have guessed a young new world Pinot. There is a noticeable intensity to the tones and a darker quality to the wine. This certainly needs a good bit of time before it truly reveals what it has to offer.

2002 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges 92 Points

Nose: The nose is very tightly wound. It takes some good swirling to start to uncoil with dark red cherries, cranberries, earth tones, spices, raspberries, and a touch of violets. Though the nose is tight, there is real class and depth to it.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity and chewy tannins. The structure is extremely youthful and powerful with dark red cherries, cranberries, earth tones, raspberries, and some violets.
Overall: This is still extremely young. It needs a good amount of time to fully show itself. Even with that, there is a ton to like here and this can really improve to the high side with the requisite age.

2006 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Perrières 93 Points

Nose: The nose is deep and flowing with dark red berries, cranberries, red florals, mineral rich earth notes, dark red cherries, perfumes, and some brown spices. There is some raw power to this too that almost overwhelms, but instead just fills the glass.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity and chewy tannins. The structure is very youthful, but it isn't overpowering with cranberries, dark red berries, mineral rich earth, dark red cherries, and some brown spice tones.
Overall: This was a gorgeous and young wine. It is deceptively drinking right now, but this feels like it can get better with more age.

This bottle just didn't want to really come out and play. The nose was very tight and the palate was marked by its big structure.

1991 Georges Noëllat Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 91 Points

Nose: The nose is very perfumed and aromatic with dark red florals, earth tones, dark red cherries, violets, and some brown spices. There is good depth with a layering effect to the nose too.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and silky supporting tannins. The feel is polished and refined with earth tones, cranberries, dark red cherries, spice tones, and dark red florals that explode on the back end.
Overall: This was lovely and well balanced. This showed off beautifully an aged NSG and it had a real deft touch while retaining a rusticity as well.

1995 Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes 88 Points

Nose: The nose is balanced and aromatic with dark red fruits, red cherries, earth tones, cranberries, spice notes, and some perfumes. There is a real perfume to the nose, but it does lack some depth.
Taste: Medium bodied with higher acidity. The acidity is a bit astringent, but there is a real pretty feel with dark red fruits, red cherries, spice tones, earth, and a bit of tobacco.
Overall: This was a straight forward and balanced NSG. The acidity was a slight problem, but this was enjoyable and drinking well.

1999 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 92 Points

Nose: There is real tension and balance to the nose with dark red cherries, cranberries, spice tones, violets, perfumes, and some red berries. There is excellent depth, though it is wound tighter at the moment.
Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity and youthful tannins. The structure is still youthful and a bit coarse with dark red cherries, spice tones, cranberries, violets, and some earth notes.
Overall: This still has a long way to go, but there is a ton to like at the moment. The nose is starting to get there, but the palate is a ways off. I will love to try this again down the road.

Nose: This showed a more intense side with dark red cherries, licorice, violets, cranberries, and some oak tones. This isn't necessarily overdone, but it is far from bashful.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity and some wood tannins. The feel is larger with dark red cherries, licorice, cranberries, and some oak tones.
Overall: This showed off as more intense and lacked the rustic quality I want from an NSG.
