Introduction

I could definitely get used to this (or maybe I already have?); Lufthansa First Class on FRA-SEA aboard an Airbus A330-300 aircraft. While the wine list had a little overlap with previous trips, overall it was a very nice selection with a number of heavy hitters and surprise sleepers.

  • NV Laurent-Perrier Champagne Grand Siecle 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    Almond, yeast and citrus on the nose. Rich body, some creamy lemon, nuts, brioche with a great spine of minerality and nice focus. Finishes with nice length of tart lemon.

  • 2012 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs 92 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

    Light and fresh nose; a touch of sweetness, tropical fruit and peach. Solid body, nice weight and acidity. White peach, lemon curd. Medium length finish. Balanced acidity and crispness.

  • 2013 Friedrich Kiefer Eichstetter Herrenbuck Grauburgunder Dreistern 90 Points

    Rich nose with pear and chalk notes. Medium weight, with apple, pear, and some Meyer lemon. Steely acidity, good backbone and nice finish. A touch lean, but nice and good with food.

    Day 2 (on the ground), I enjoyed this a bit more, but no formal notes taken.

    Notable oak influence, alongside light lemon and hay. Fuller, richer body. Mineral and acid, with citrus and creamy lemon curd.

    Nose of leather, earth, dried fruit and spice. Dark red fruit, big spice and tannin on the body. Red cherry, black cherry and plum fruit, rounded out with a little tobacco. Medium fine tannins on the finish. A little VA.

    Big oak, toast and spice; the nose is not shy. Bright red fruit, fresh and rich, leading into spicy, drying tannins on a lingering finish. Good acidity.

    Dark fruit, cassis, leather, baking spice. Soft, elegant and ready to drink. Blackberry, plum, a little earth on the palate. Fine tannins. Good acidity.

    Lovely rich nose of apricot, mango and honey. Full, viscous body with golden raisin, mango and apricot. Nice sweetness balanced out by the acidity. A bit of grip/super soft fine tannins on the finish. Very enjoyable!
