Wines from 1964 - 50-year birthday tasting

The theme was wines from 1964 - with one exception a young white Montrachet.

Champagne 1964

• 1964 Heidsieck & Co. Monopole Champagne Diamant Bleu

  France, Champagne

  Hardly any bubbles left and a bit oxidized. Drinkable but not great. It was a tired bottle that should have been drunk earlier.

White

• 2007 Domaine Amiot Guy et Fils Montrachet 95 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

  Intense nose - fat, buttery, fruity and mineral all at the same time. Still young and powrfull but very elegant and a real treat to drink now. A great bottle of wine living up to its pedigree.

Bourgogne 1964

• 1964 Arthur Barolet et Fils Chambertin Tête de Cuvée 94 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

  Fantastic nose and dark colour. Still very fresh and even with 50 years it seems to be at its peak. Mushrooms, sous bois,red and dark berries. Great glass of wine.

• 1964 Maison Leroy Grands-Echezeaux 99 Points

  Really an emotional experience. Still so fresh. Intoxicating nose and it is difficult to single out the many tasting sensations as it is just a perfect wine. Very smooth and silky with a finish that goes on and on - you could still feel its presence the next day. Ethereal.

Bordeaux 1964

  Not particularly complex or long, but a nice glass of mature wine that has held up quite good.

• 1964 Vieux Château Certan 94 Points

  Great nose. Still fresh, complex, smooth and elegant at the same time. Long. This wine has matured nicely. Very good.

Barolo 1964

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Great bottle of wine. Mature but fresh. Great balance with earthy aromas, leather and a long finish.

  A fantastic aged barolo. Impeccably balanced. Dried berries, leather, chocolate and earthy aromas. What a treat.

Sauternes 1964

  Beautiful aged golden colour. Not terribly complex but drinking nicely. A good finish to a range of 50 year old wines.

A great set of wines and we were very lucky that almost all wines showed its best. The Champagnes were tired and the Conterno Barolo was not good but all the others delivered.
