From Magnum. Very gold-brown and grainy in flavor spectrum - nutmeg, some ginger, yeast, nuts, lemon. Delicious on the palate: shows the brown-nutmeg, ginger, yeast, but the sweetness comes through as lemon and green apple. Very full and complete. Some sweet vanilla oak comes in at the finish with lemon, nutmeg and a mineral note. The finish is focused and potent. 2004 = kick ass. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16.5/20.
From Magnum. Very bright and sharp. Very 96. A nice contrast with the 04 Vilmart. Nose of lemon, minerals and powdered stones. Very focused on the palate with lemon, saline, stones, yeast. This is a fairly light champagne that grabs you with it's acid and cut. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16.5/20.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Light orange-gold. Mature nose, not big: sweet, nutty, caramel-marzipan. Matt says stewed fruit-peach. I said Hibiscus. Matt thought that was solid and raised with rose hips. Brulee. Soft on the palate with caramel, some nuts, salty - very Meursault, lemon, intense saline-lemon finish. Very potent. 86 White Burg ... there you go. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
From Magnum. Big and broad nose: lots of wood, lemon, nuts, salty - popcorn? Spices, brown. Broad on the palate as well - salty, popcorn, lemon, minerals. Yummy and not heavy. Tasty. Not as focused as I tend to like, but pretty good. These later Boillots are smelling more and more like Coche, but can't quite get the same palate energy, cut and heft. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5/20.
Moderate bricking. Very mature: nose of sweet fruit with lots of secondary elements, some spice, mint herbs and a savory soy/meat thing. This is in a nice spot for me. The palate still has a lot of structure - solid tannins and acid, but the mid-palate fans out nicely with some plushness from the Cab fruit. Herbal, mint, dark plummy fruit. If you can't get this is CA cab blind then hang in up. Very balanced. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.
From Magnum. Stems, Stems, Stems! Then some pretty red-blue fruit underneath: raspberry-cranberry, spices. This is good on the palate - ready, but will improve. Sappy blue-red fruit, raspberry, cherry, blackberry, stems, nice spice, oak, some citrus zest. Nice intergrated mouthfeel, creamy. Stony-zest-red fruit finish. Nose - 4.5-5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 15.5-16.5/20.
USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County
From Magnum. Crisp nose: bright cherry fruit, citrus zest, herbal - lavender, spice, stones. Stony and citrusy on the palate, good acid with bright fruit, some spice. Tasty and integrated. Cherry finish. This is the closest I have had to a mature Rhys, and I like what I see. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4-4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15-15.5/20.
Alan brought this. Ah Riesling ... big nose with fruit up front and then some Austrian aspects along side it: ripe peach, peach pit, brothy, nutmeg, some citrus. Burly palate with peach and spice, lots of acid - ouch! Pure peach and stone finish - long and focused. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5/20.
