A private and cosy evening with the owner of Pontet and great friends. All wines ex-chateau and decanted prior to tasting. Served with light appetizers, lamb, tarts, sliders.

Stupendous showing of wines that have really come good in the 2000s when biodynamics and organic have rehabilitated the property. Bravo !
1996 Château Pontet-Canet 91 Points

Nose of tobacco, leather, restrained spices, a hint of pear and citrus. Light and ephermal in the mouth delicate with traces of herbaciousness and green which I encountered elsewhere in the vintage. Poised structure. Very drinkable now.

A deep and bold wine with the colour to match. Lovely nose of berries spice leather chocolate liqueur and meats. Powerful structure and lasting finish. A hint of flint and gravel but not detracting.

2009 Château Pontet-Canet 98 Points

Tasted at vertical of Chateau stock, 1996-2009. Instantly in the nose a blossoming of berry, cherry, jam, leather, a sandalwood, smoke, tobacco and tar. The nose has a lift to it, we discussed how the addition of Petit Verdot helps to define the flavors. Stunning nose, clean yet encapsulating all the complexity of an extraordinary wine. On the palette equally impressive, but definitely young. Hasn't opened up to reflect all the flavors encased therein. Very long finish of subtlety. Definitely a once a lifetime wine.
