  • 2012 Collestefano Verdicchio di Matelica

    Italy, Marche, Verdicchio di Matelica

After drinking through all my 2013 vintage I was able source some more of the 2012 and I am glad I did. This is nice wine and a great value. There is a little more concentration with this vintage and it shows some honeyed edges. Good acid keeps the wine fresh. A crowd pleaser.

  • 2003 Château Brane-Cantenac

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Tasted double blind. Decanted for about an hour. Slight bricking color. On the nose some mushroom, leather, slight mint and eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine is soft and silky with medium acid with quite a bit of secondary notes. There is still a fair amount of fruit in the wine. With time a little more tannin emerges and the wine gains some sweetness. My first thought was a super tuscan but I didn't think it had enough acid to be Italian. Then thought Bordeaux or CA Bordeaux blend. Guessed a 10-15 year old California Bordeaux blend due to the slightly lower acid/higher fruit profile and the eucalyptus. I enjoyed this and it was my favorite red of the night.

  • 2005 Eric Guerra Cabernet Sauvignon

USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley

Its been about 4 years since I have had one of these and this still showed very primary and young. Others liked it more than me. Ripe, black fruits with a stalky, iron streak. I probably would have guessed petite syrah if I had tasted this blind.

  • 2005 Avenel Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

I enjoyed this more than the Eric Guerra Cab. Fruity, but a more restrained mix of red and black fruits with what I thought were limestone like mineral accents. Soft and silky.
