Introduction

Great line up of wines from Spain in a compare and contrast of styles that was very educational and fun.

  • 2002 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia 89 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

mature red classic rioja, leather, cherries, sloeberries on the nose. Fruit is a little faded so the acidity tends to dominate on the palate, but with a soft initial attack. finish is not super elegant, but who doesn't like a wine like this?

  • 2011 Bodegas Roda Rioja Sela 91 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

On the nose there is a lot of fresh blue berries, some oak but not disturbing in any way. Very good structure, this is a young wine that clearly will improve and integrate further with some age. A little heat on the finish currently, great grip. Loved it.

  • 2012 Guimaro Ribeira Sacra Finca Meixeman 91 Points

    Spain, Galicia, Ribeira Sacra

Exciting nose, lots of very warm fruit, sweet berries, but also good freshness, elegant body, some heat at the back end gives a slightly unbalanced impression, but overall a very interesting and enjoyable wine!

  • 2006 Dominio de Tares Bierzo Bembibre 87 Points

    Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo

Finetuned nose and good fruit, but unfortunately, there is a disturbing note of bitter oak and some heat.

  • 2013 Comando G La Bruja 91 Points

    Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid

Licorice root tea and ripe grenache berries, uncomplicated but perfectly structured, expressive and lovely wine. If there is more complexity developing over time, this may be a really interesting wine, but drinks real well at the present stage also.

  • 2013 Celler Dosterras Montsant Vespres 84 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant

Very big and a little too much of everything (fruit and oak) and for me not my favourite expression of grenache. But not a bad wine by any means.

Closing

The overall impression is similar to what I felt when I visited Barcelona recently - so many interesting and under appreciated wines at good value from Spain!
