Took a note on this at the end of the meal, after this had been open for a while: creamy and chalky nose, minerals. Similar on palate - a really nice melange of cream and chalk, like a vanilla-chalk milkshake, a bit nutty with something like sweet marzipan flavors. Doesn't show as sweet - I think the RS just adds a bit to the creaminess. No detailed scores - probably about 15/20.
From 375ml. This didn't show as well as I expected. Very shut down at first. With time, it developed some aromas of tart cherry - berry, some dried roses - floral, mushrooms & earth, spice, and some minerality. But it seemed overly harsh - maybe even a bit tinny. Similar on the palate.
Young Prum nose - some sponti, which I always read as brown spices - cumin, some peach, red apple. Airy and Elegant. Very light on the palate - spicy, peach, red apple, some sweet acid. Soft peach and flint on the finish, then the acid comes out more - with grapefruit and lemon. Classic Kabinett. Maybe even a bit light for my tastes - something about the 08 Germans never quite clicked for me. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20.
AP#3. The nose starts with something funky - to me it smelled earthy-mushroomy (Michael thought it might be Sulfur), while Suzanne smelled tea. The funkiness burns off and I get the tea, herbal, lush fruit aromas - lychee, peach. Enters the palate lush as well with honey, lychee, grapefruit, the acid is hiding, not 100% integrated yet. Slate, grapefruit. The finish is great with lemon, slate and burning acid. Nose - 4.5-5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16.5-17/20.
I purchased this recently so I wouldn't have to touch my original stock. This was really disappointing when opened - it seemed flat and sweet - old and tired. It was very cold at that point. However, some air, time and heat improved the wine immensely - so that now I think it was just shut down on opening and needed to breathe and warm up a bit. Baked apple, huge spice, something powdered about it - stone? spice? Soaring minerality. This enters sweet, but structured: baked apple, red apple, spice, with power in reserve. Lemon and passionfruit acid glisten below the surface and then emerge to burn the tongue on the finish. Golden all the way through, but superb lift. Some floral and herbal notes, lemon, citric, mineral, red apple finish. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5-5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5-18/20.
NB - I posted this note before, but had it as the 2010, so I deleted that note and reposted.
