Introduction
Richard Brazier of ancient and modern wines ( http://www.ancientandmodernwines.co.uk/) presented a flight of 1999 Burgundy while trying to show case this highly regarded vintage.
We found the wines in general young, still restrained and needing time to develop and show the goodness in this vintage of such high expectations. Lets see...
1999 J.M. Boillot Pommard 1er Cru Les Jarollières 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Color, has a brownish tint. Quite an expressive nose.More dark fruits than red. Touch of strawberries too. Good tannin, ripe fruit, juicy side to it but not heavy in any way. Good wine with good balance and length. 90

1999 Nicolas Potel Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots 89 Points

Light on the nose, almost no nose at all. Quite vibrant to start with on the palate, good tannin and acidity but does come with a few rough edges. Felt a touch tried and even a touch dry on the finish. Def not expected this. 89 not sure if time will make it better,

Quite a complex nose , lively and open. Light spice maybe a touch roast meat. However the palate is not there, and felt light with a thin mid palate and hard edges. One dimensional in a way. Andreas 88 / Nicol 90 > 89

Beautiful nose, openn, expressive, savoury notes too. Light floral too and kept improving in the glass.
Young wine and full of promise, touch restrained on the palate albeit red fruits show nicely. Grippy on the tannin, firm and time would help here. Wait 5yrs but this is def worth the wait. 93

1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers

This wine is either too young and will evolve into something good or its just as hard as nails for ever. In either way we could not rate it on the day.
Smoky, roast meat on the nose, touch of dark fruits. Albeit on the color it was brownish, it was really back ward and Nicol's note "hard as nails" described it well for us. Worried abt it to be honest.

WOTN for the group and for both of us.
A master class of a nose, smoky undertone, dark fruits, beautiful and complex. Very expressive with a flowery undertone. On the palate it is very good and albeit it has a lot of life ahead of it it felt nice for a change vs the rest of the 99s which felt restrained. Lots of life ahead of it. Superb 93-94

1999 Geantet-Pansiot Charmes-Chambertin 93 Points

Touch of brownish note on the rim. Very nice nose, open and expressive and was very rich and ripe closer to what we would expect 1999 to be. Light Spicy edge so nice. Could be mistaken for a syrah at times. Still on the young side and more a red fruited wine but very good now and will aged very nicely. Great surprise. 93-94

Backward wine, sharp and the tannin was too much on the forefront and dominated what other wise was a pretty nice wine. Needs a lot of time for the fruit to develop. Even with all these constraints one does not fail to see that this is a quality wine and with some patience , say 5yrs, this will be a great wine. 91-92

for us it was flawed with eggy, sulphur notes on the nose and very difficult to approach. Shame
