  • 2006 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pignan Reserve 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Very pale crimson, lake rim, translucent; raspberries galore, floral, high acid, Burgundian, sour cherry, tea, exotic and sweet but the herbal notes in the background add nice savory quality; soft texture, high acid, cherry and raspberry, rose, orange oil, more medicinal with air; elegant and really delicious; very good now.

  • 2005 P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Père & Fils Corton-Clos du Roi 92 Points

    Dull garnet core with crimson rim, see through; nutty, sulfur, sh*t stank, mahogany, leather, meaty cherry, slight vegetal, earth and dirt; larger scaled on the palate, licorice, roses, sappy texture, lower acid for Pinot, slight tannin on the finish, viscous, supple, supple; this bottle was very good and could have been better with a slight chill and some decanting.

    Very dark core with 1/4 in. bricking, youthful appearance; powerful, cigar, tobacco, earth, cow pie (Pauillac), leather, currant, green pepper, so deep and luxurious; an unevolved baby compared to previous bottles though still quite enjoyable.

    Super light lake core with pale rim; reductive, liquid limestone, really bright red fruit, leaner, cranberry, softer tannin but so much mineral; should age well for mid-term aging though I'd probably be surprised how long it will last; delicious.

    Purple maroon core with reddish purple rim, see through; vanilla, stem, rose, deep red and dark fruit, sour dark cherry, ash; rich red and dark fruit with high acid, some vegetal, some tannin; very good though aeration should help open it up a bit; 90+.

    See through dark maroon; sweet cherry, slight vanilla, plum, rich and delicious nose, cherry pit, taut; sour cherry on the palate, rich red and dark cherry, softer but some texture, leather, tense; very good, surprisingly soft for Pommard.

Closing

What a night! Great Burgs and great examples of Burgundian Sangiovese and Grenache. Then there's Mouton! The Champagne wasn't half bad either.

Harder to pick a bad wine tonight rather than decide on the top 3.
