    77% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Chardonnay, 3% Semillon; bright yellow with light green hues; grass, straw, herbal, bitter melon, wooly; richer on the palate, good acid but lower for SB, gooseberry, almost tannic, grainy mineral; seems like domestic SB in a way.

    Spain, Castilla y León, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León

    Dark core with reddish garnet rim; vanilla, marzipan, cherry, chocolate; red fruit on the palate, some heat on the finish, soft texture, slightly stewed fruit on the finish, strong vanilla, cabbage, red currant, funk, loamy; good.

  • 1995 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio All'Oro

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Dark core with bricking; soy, fennel, dried red fruit, cedar, licorice, caraway, caramel, tar, mushroom; soft texture, dock at low tide, higher acid, dried red fruit, green pepper, silky, long, luxurious, aged, almost Bordeaux-like, pretty incense; still holding up; very good.

  • 1995 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino

    Dark core with bricking; soy and charcoal, brown sugar, molasses, aged, dried red fruit; smooth palate, aged, soft, tastier palate than nose; past peak in my opinion, died with more air.

  • 2004 Domaine de Nerleux Saumur-Champigny Les Loups Noirs

    Dark core with thin garnet rim; musty and green nose, briary, green pepper, faint black currant and blackberry; soft tannin, mineral, limestone, spicy, dark fruit, palate is much better than nose suggests; got better with air.

  • 2000 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    See through dark crimson with copper rim; slight VA, dried red fruit, cinnamon, incense, nutty, soft tannin, cedar, rose, cherry, spicy finish with red fruit; was missing the nobility I normally associate with Poggio di Sotto.

    Dark core with bright maroon rim; reductive, plastic, petroleum, tart and sweet berry, a little subdued; tart red berry, soft texture, coffee, nice freshness in the finish, tart cranberry; good.

Closing

Kind of fun to do a 1995 Banfi Brunello horizontal. The Poggio All'Oro definitely showed why it is a Riserva.
Hard to do a top 3 because it was the '95 Banfi Riserva BdM and then everything else.
