Introduction

In this great tasting we went through a lot of wines from the vineyard site Saumagen in Kallstadt with the manager Dominik Sona. We tasted Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Auslese "R" from 2008 to 2013.

  • 2004 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese trocken R 94 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

    This was our last wine at the estate and I didn´t take any notes on this one but it had a beautiful open, hedonistic nose with dried apricote, camomile and a bit of a toffee component. On the palate the wine was very soft and smooth. Medium+ finish. Maybe it lacks a bit of acidity for my personal taste nevertheless this is a wonderful wine.

  • 2008 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese trocken R 92 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

    Nose: A bit of apricote, organe zest and brown cinnamon but the fruit is not expressive. You also get a "herb component".
    Palate: Very juicy, good tension on the mid-palate, medium acidity, nice mineral drive on the back-end. Drinking very well at the moment but no need to hurry.

  • 2009 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese trocken R

    Very difficult to form an opinion about this wine. For me it is shut down. Don´t get much on the nose. Very dark & unapproachable. Needs time but good potential. NR.

  • 2011 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese trocken R 92 Points

    Nose: In contrast to the 2009 Auslese "R" this is open (owed to the vintage) with a expressive nose of pear, apple juice, leek and a slightly oxidative note.
    Palate: Depending on the vintage you get here this brighter juice which appeals a bit rustic (but not in a negativ sense). Great salty component on the mid-palate and a lot of licorice on the finish. Will definitely be one of the Auslesen "R" which you can enjoy a bit earlier. The estate will release this wine in 2017.

  • 2012 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese trocken R 96 Points

    Nose: You can already receive an first impression of the potential of this wine on the nose. A bit of Sauerkraut (pickled cabbage), we found this component frequently in the Saumagen wines, crashed stones, a lot of herbs underlaid by a dark mineral compontent. Mystical nose.
    Palate: I just love this perfect mix between tension, power on the mid-palate, higher acidity than I found in the other Auslesen "R" in this tasting, a great smoky note and long, long finish.
    My WOTN with so much potential to go on the marathon run. I knew that there are many great wines in 2012 but this is a benchmark by now. Will appear on the market in 2018 but you can already place your reservation at the estate.
