Introduction

It was RL who first introduced me to wine over ten years ago. Back then, his drinking consisted almost entirely of Super Tuscany and Brunello di Montalcino. It still does. But what RL lacks in diversity of drinking choices, he makes up for in amount and enthusiasm! So it was great to catch up with my old wine mentor, whom I've not seen in awhile. Arcane is also a terrific new restaurant, and I left thinking I'll come back. The only small complaint is that the tables are spaced quite closely together, so at times it felt I was in three separate conversations. But with real estate costing what it does here in this ridiculous city...

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Latour Les Forts de Latour 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Graceful and elegant. Classic cassis and lead pencil signature of Pauillac. Medium bodied, silky tannins, smooth finish. Drinking very nicely for a second wine of this age, but then again this is Latour. Popped and poured, and it showed well almost immediately. There was some weakening towards the end of lunch. One of those wines that won't reward decanting, it seems!

  • 2001 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Deep pungent and toasty nose of cocoa bean, caramel and tar. Some floral notes too. Definitely darker both to eye and palate than your normal Brunello. Very svelte and slinky smooth wine, expressive layers of black fruit that grew more and more chocolaty in the glass. Took its time to open up, but open up very nicely it did. Remnants I brought home from lunch were still delicious at dinner. A very nice Brunello
