  I was very impressed by this Italian Chardonnay (actually 80% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Blanc to be exact). It was perched somewhere between Burgundy and the new world to me, with a mix of fruit and balance that was rather unique. The nose had a creamy, buttery note to it to go along with ripe stone-fruit notes with an exotic tropical edge, but also a good dose of mineral, spice and flowers. Quite attractive. It was ripe and sunny on the palate, with with more sweet stone fruit - white peach flesh I thought - and some sweet apples licked with sweet cream. All impeccably balanced though, with fresh acidity and plenty of good extract leading into a lovely grippy end, where kumquat notes were laced with a stony minerality. A very commendable effort, drinking well in its relative youth. Should improve with time too.

• 2010 Georges Dubœuf Morgon Domaine Mont Chavy 88 Points

  Decent but unexciting Morgon. The nose showed sweet, ripe notes of blackberries and plums topped up with some earthy spice. This was echoed on the palate by more of that sweet black fruit with a little cola twang at the edges, this time accompanied by some bittersweet Chinese herbs and a touch of menthol, all in the grip of rather mouth coating tannins - all a bit over obviously extracted I thought, but the balance was decent enough, and it served alright as a good wine. Nothing terribly exciting about this. Drinkable, but not one I would go out and buy.
