  • 2012 Domaine Bruno Clair Marsannay Les Vaudenelles

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay

    Deep ruby. Brambly vivid raspberry fruit. Very meaty, a bit rough and tumble with raspy licorice and acidity. A lot of wine for a Marsannay here.

  • 2012 Domaine Bruno Clair Chambolle-Musigny Les Véroilles

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

    Even ruby. Oh my god, after the rather savage nose of the Marsannay, this was ethereal and refined in comparison with gentle perfume and small red fruits. Silky, deep, and complex with a whiff of smokiness to complement the gorgeous fruit. Wonderful underpinning of acidity, not terribly tannic. I was quite taken aback by how harmonious and elegant this was since my image of Clair wines is more foursquare than this.

  • 2012 Domaine Bruno Clair Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

    Deep ruby. Stern black fruit aromatics without any Savigny briary qualities. Dense black fruit and anise, feels like it is in balance but not very forthcoming now due to high tannins. Very different register of flavors than the Marsannay and Chambolle.

  • 2012 Domaine Bruno Clair Vosne-Romanée Les Champs Perdrix

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

    Dark ruby. Muted aromatics. Also black fruited but much more airy and elegant than the Savigny. Good slug of tannin, nice structure, more difficult to read than the other wines.

Closing

These wines all had a combination of wonderful fruit and significant structure for development, making me excited by the prospect of tasting through a wider range of 2012 red wines in due time. In particular, the Chambolle Veroilles may be the most tender, seductive wine I've ever had the pleasure of tasting from Bruno Clair.
