  • 2007 Léon Beyer Pinot Gris Cuvée des Comtes d'Eguisheim 90 Points

    France, Alsace

    Nose with a pronounced mushroom note, undergrowth, spice, and winter apple. The palate is dry but still shows sweetness of fruit in the attack, with notes of yellow apple, spices, a viscous profile and medium acidity. A very peculiar wine and exceptionally "mushroomy" wine. 90 p?

    Nose with lychee, honey, some spice, and perfume. The palate is dry with good concentration, honey, yellow apple, and medium acidity. Definitely a fresh style for a Gewürztraminer. 88 p

  • 2003 Léon Beyer Pinot Noir Comtes d'Eguisheim 89 Points

    France, Alsace

    Nose with cherries, some dried red berries, smoke, and a hint of flowers. Palate with powerful concentration, ripe red berries, some dried red berries, and medium+ tannins. Tough and still young, 89 p.
    This 2003 is very good wine, but surprisingly tough for a red wine from Alsace, and can definitely take additional cellaring.

  • 1998 Léon Beyer Gewurztraminer Quintessence Sélection de Grains Nobles 93 Points

    France, Alsace

    Nose with honey, dried fruit, aromatic oils, spice, some lychee and a hint of developed notes. The palate is very sweet with honey, pronounced spiciness, powerful concentration, and medium acidity. Still fresh, rather comes across as around five years of age. 93 p
    From the grand cru vineyard Eichberg, approx. 150 grams per liter of residual sugar.

Flight 3 - Pierre Sparr (4 Notes)

  • 2012 Pierre Sparr Alsace One 85 Points

    France, Alsace

    Nose with peach and perfume. The palate is dry (just about bone dry) but is still fruity with peach and medium acidity. Rather perfumed for an Edelzwicker – the Muscat component definitely comes through. Rather young. 85 p?
    On the sweetness scale (1-9) this is indicated to be: 1 = completely dry.
    The composition of Pierre Sparr's Alsace One has varied between vintages. The 2012 is a blend of Muscat, Riesling, and Pinot Gris, and comes across much more as a “toned-down Muscat” than a middle-of-the-road Edelzwicker.

    Nose with peach, ripe yellow apple and a discrete perfume note. The palate is completely dry with good minerality, rather good concentration, citrus, apple, and a good acidity. Young, 87(+) p.
    On the sweetness scale (1-9) this wine is indicated as: 1 = completely dry.
    Also known as "Riesling Sélection".

  • 2012 Pierre Sparr Pinot Gris Reserve 86 Points

    France, Alsace

    Nose with ripe yellow fruit, peach, and some apricot. Palate with some sweetness (“off-dry minus”), fruity, rather good concentration, and medium+ acidity. 86 p.
    On the sweetness scale (1-9) this is indicated as: 4 = off-dry with a rather noticeable level of sweetness.
    The 2012 is definitely better than some previous vintages of this wine from the last couple of years.

  • 2012 Pierre Sparr Gewurztraminer 85 Points

    Fruity nose with lychee, perfume, and roses. The palate shows some sweetness and is “off-dry (-)”, perfumed, with yellow apple, some tropical fruit, not too concentrated, very discrete spice note, and medium(-) acidity. Not particularly spicy for a Gewürztraminer, more of a fruity style. 85 p
    On the sweetness scale (1-9) this wine is indicated as: 4 = off-dry with a rather noticeable level of sweetness.
    Also known as "Gewurztraminer Sélection".

    Nose with peach, ripe fruit, discrete perfume notes, stony minerality and some petroleum. The palate is completely dry with stony mineral notes, apple, citrus, and a high acidity. A firm and elegant wine in a classical style that still is rather young. 89(+) p.

    Residual sweetness 13 g/l according to retailer's fact sheet, i.e., "halbtrocken" by German standards.

  • NV Michel Fonné Crémant d'Alsace 86 Points

    France, Alsace, Crémant d'Alsace

    Nose with ripe yellow apple, bread, some citrus and some mineral. The palate is dry, medium bodied and creamy with yellow apple, good acidity and some mineral. A good Crémant with a fruity palate and good balance. The nose is rather Champagne-like, but the palate isn’t. 86 p
    70% Pinot Blanc, 30% Pinot Noir, at least 18 months on the lees. Sweetness code 1 = completely dry.

    Nose with ripe yellow fruit, rose petals and perfume. A distinct nose but discrete for a Gewürztraminer, and gives a somewhat sweeter impression than the previous wine. Rather dry (but more residual sweetness impression than the 2012 Gewurz Tradition), palate with typical notes, good concentration, peach and honey, 89 p.
