Introduction

A tasting of various sweet wines, we all brought a bottle

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2011 Greywacke Late Harvest Riesling 88 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

    Clear pale yellow color.
    The nose is clean, showing med/med+ intensity, fresh ripe pear and apricot, lime flesh and juice, orange and nutmeg, hints of pastry, developing.
    The wine is sweet, med+ body, med/med+ intensity, med+ acidity and medium alcohol (12%), tin pineapple, pear syrup, light honey notes, felt that it lacked complexity, med/med+ finish.
    Very good wine that will never let you down, drinking well now, I wouldn't keep it more.

  • 2004 Domaine Gerovassiliou Malagousia from overripe grapes Flawed

    Greece, Macedonia, Epanomi

    The wine was corked sadly so not much going on in the nose but in the palate you could still taste a few things.
    Starting with apricot jam, honey and cinnamon, pear and peach compote but rather thin and short finish.
    Despite the TCA infected nose, the palate was very good.

  • 2005 Domaine Weinbach Pinot Gris Vendanges Tardives 86 Points

    France, Alsace

    Clear pale yellow color.
    The nose is clean, showing medium intensity, honey at first but hard to find something else, there is a "dampness" in it making it quite strange overall, stewed quince, overripe apricot and peach, some medicinal note in the back, fully developed and going down.
    Semisweet, medium body and intensity, medium acidity and alcohol (12.50%), tin quince, stewed peach in the med finish.
    Very good quality, drinking yesterday.
    I shouldn't have kepted it for so long.

  • 2012 Peller Estates Cabernet Franc Icewine Andrew Peller Signature Series 90 Points

    The wine has a clear caramel color.
    The nose is clean, showing medium/medium+ intensity, fig and plum jam, honey and nutmeg, youthful.
    The wine is sweet, full body and high intensity, medium alcohol (11.5%) and med acidity, honey and raisin, fig and caramel, it felt "warmer" that the typical white grape based icewine but made it more interesting in the same time, fat but not cloying, med/med+ finish.
    Outstanding quality, drining well now but could hold

  • 2000 Acquabona Aleatico Elba 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Elba

    Clear dark caramel color.
    The nose is clean, showing med+ intensity, coffee beans, roasted barley, chocolate, roasted nuts, madeira notes, thin layers of oak, syrup, fig and grape jam, black and blue berry jam, fully developed.
    Sweet showing full body and high intensity, med+ acidity and med alcohol (14%), complexity in the palate tha copied the nose, acidity cutting through, burnt toast in the med+ to long finish.
    Utterly interesting, outstanding quality, drinking well now but not for the faint hearted

  • 2005 Feudi di San Gregorio Privilegio 89 Points

    Clear pale caramel color.
    The nose is clean, showing med intensity, thyme and tea leaves, honey, apricot and peach jam, hints of toast with a few walnuts sprinkled on top, developed.
    Sweet, full body and high intensity, medium alcohol (12%) and acidity, palate copying the nose, med+ finish.
    Very good quality, drinking well now but I wouldn't keep it much longer.

  • 2000 Chateau Dereszla Tokaji Aszú Eszencia 96 Points

    Clear pale honey/amber color.
    The nose is clean, showing med/med+ intensity, hoeny, roasted and caramelized almond, walnut liquer, caramel, ripe apricot and peach, hints of toast, butter and sultanas, developing.
    The wine is sweet, full body and high intenstity, low alcohol (10%), high acidity balancing the extreme level of sugar, utterly complex, hoeny and fig, caramel, peach and apricot (both overripe and compte), velvety texture, thin layers of oak, walut and coffee beans and in the never ending finish.
    Outstanding quality, drinking now and for a long time
