Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2008 Eitzinger Anton St. Laurent Pablo 88 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

    Tasted blind. Pop and poured.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby with garnet rim. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of raspberry and dark cherry. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, medium- tannins, medium- body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of raspberry, ripe strawberry, dark cherry, very slight blackberry, and sweet licorice. Short finish.
First time trying this grape varietal. Initially tasted very much like a Beaujolais, but opened up a bit more with air. Acceptable quality. Doesn't feel like it is going to improve with further ageing. If anything, the acidity and intensity of fruit may not hold up. Drink up.

  • 2010 Ridge Geyserville 93 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

    Slow-oxed in bottle for about 1 hour+.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of vanilla, spice, caramel, and crayons! Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol that is hardly felt, fine medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of strawberry jam, rich dark cherry juice, vanilla, caramel, peppery spice, leather. Long finish.
Very good quality. Almost excellent balance. I would think maybe another 2 years and the vanilla oak should integrate in seamlessly. Lovely wine. This ain't no jammy fruit bomb.
    64% Zinfandel, 20% Carignane, 12% Petit Sirah, 2% Alicante Bouschet, 2% Mataro.

  • 2007 Tasca D'Almerita Rosso del Conte 91 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Contea di Sclafani

Tasted blind. Aired in decanter for about 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of earth, barnyard, minerality, and prunes. With more air, the barnyard did blow off, and showed more smoky earth and oak presence. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of smoked ham, bacon, savoury meaty notes, wild spices, minerality, prunes, and dark plums. Medium+ finish.
Very good quality. If this wasn't tasted on a "not-the-usual-grapes" night, I would have guessed a Northern Rhone Syrah. Can drink now, and will probably continue to develop nicely over the next 5 years.
Blend of 75% Nero d'Avola, 15% Perricone, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon for this vintage.

  • 2012 Domaine des Ardoisières Vin des Allobroges Améthyste 89 Points

    France, Savoie, Vin des Allobroges

Tasted blind. Pop and poured. Wax seal over cork.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of stinky earth, dried dung, woody bark. The initial stink did blow off a bit with more air, showing other aromas of prunes and plums with the earth. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, rustic coarse high tannins, medium alcohol, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury earth, leather, sweet and sour prunes, sour plums, sour cherries, slight spice, woodiness. Long finish.
Good quality. Very intriguing wine. Will be interesting to see how this develops with age. Has the stuffing to do so.
Blend of 60% Persan and 40% Mondeuse. Rare varietals from the Savoie Region.
