Big Wines Night - or how a Riesling stole the show?

Introduction

It was great to finally meet Chris and also to see Eric, Rob and Alan again. We settled on drinking BIG wines - and, TBH, we overachieved... thankfully my bed was only a door away - i doubt i could walk much further. Many great wines tonight - and the Lillian was a true revelation. Turleys showed themselves for what they are - perfect at polarizing the crowd :) I love them - what can i say - i am a sucker for curves :)
Rob has been slowly training my palate with the K-R wines... i give up. they are DAMN GOOD. and i need MOAR. Oh and there are notes too:

  • 2011 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Cascina Francia 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba

    Best Red wine tonight. Roses, ripe black fruit, blackberry and chocolates. the mid is like biting into a fresh ripe grape. cherry takes over after a bit with great freshness and acidity. long ripe finish that somehow manages to be both silky and refreshing... a beauty. this wine has takes best red twice in several months - and against serious company.

  • 2012 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Francia 93 Points

    young and a bit tight. red berry and savory notes. plums, spice and minerality. With air this showed the floral notes i was hoping for. Lots of power - but slightly awkward now. give it time.

    another excellent showing for this baby. Plums, boysenberry. spice, rich middle, herbs and meat on the back palate. ripe tannins on the finish. YUM. still a baby - lets see how it will age.

    Oak and structure showing. Serious but needs time badly. there was a hint of PAX in my mind when drinking this. Plums and ripe spices. long finish... hard to judge fairly - give it a few years.

    What a pretty wine.... though this did not take the cake tonight - this was a revelation to me personally. vanilla and smooth sexy velvet... this is the One to cuddle with. Ripe plums, blackberry, hints of coco... long finish that coats the mouth and pulls your lips into a smile... SEXY beast!!

    USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

    latex note of the top, but it blew off to reveal red berry and herbs black currant jam and ripe southern rhone mid. touch of raisin and black pepper. balanced even at its 16.1% good acidity in the back palatte and a hint of tannin. Perfect now.

    silk and velvet. ripe black and red fruit, rich sweet middle. (improved significantly by day 3) not a touch of heat here, hint of golden raisins on the finish. ripe but balanced. plums and brown sugar. Not for the light of heart but this is Zin royalty.

    PS at its best. Restrained black fruit, blackberry, spicy and kicking. herbs and pepper on the finish. Ripe but amazingly balanced. this is ready to go now. the interplay of tart red and black fruit with the richness of the wine is very fun to watch. Delicious.

  • 2009 Turley Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge 91 Points

    this was NOT fun on day 1. but a totally different wine on day three. Plum and prune on the nose, power under the hood. teeth staining ripeness but with a mean streak of acidity though it on the back palate. This is a baby that will likely reward some patience - showed a lot of promise on the third night.
