Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine Laroche Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaudevey 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Tasted blind. Pop and poured and drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear. pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of citrus lemon, green apple, slight saline minerality, and some florality. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, lovely high acidity, medium alcohol, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of citrus lemon-lime, green apple, saline and limestone minerality, chrysanthemum. Long finish.
Good quality Chablis 1er Cru, from a screw-cap! Elegant and rather good balance. Can drink now, and will develop nicely over the next 3-4 years. Excellent quality at the price point.

  • 2011 Bodega El Esteco Sauvignon Blanc Ciclos 88 Points

    Argentina, Valles Calchaquíes, Salta, Cafayate

Tasted blind. Pop and poured and drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of full-on salty brine and stony minerality. With more air, the salty brine aroma did recede a little, revealing a background of smoky toasted oak. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium+ body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of citrus lime, salty stony minerality, and with more air the creamy toasted oak came out. Long finish.
Balance not so good. Good quality nonetheless. Oaked Sauvignon Blanc. Interesting wine, but will probably lack mass appeal. May even out a little more over the next 2-3 years but I think this may never achieve good balance.

Beautiful acidity and lovely balance with just a touch of sweetness. This had me guessing a good Riesling at first.
Very good quality. Can drink now, and will continue to develop nicely over the next 10 years.
