Introduction

Monthly tasting group event. A very set of wines indeed.

Flight 1 - Starters (5 Notes)

  • NV Philippe Prié Champagne Brut Rosé 89 Points

    France, Champagne

Tonights bottle was a bit less energetic than previous bottles; still very good but lacking in some zestiness, strawberry, cherry, minerals. 89+pts.

  • NV Philippe Prié Champagne Cuvée Archange 91 Points

Light gold color. drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Another very nice showing. Big, full bodied, with good depth, yeasty, dough, green apple, subtle pear notes, bold minerality. Lingering finish.

  • 2009 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

This came through at an awkward time in the tasting with where our food was at. It got back burnered and was revisited later. I do think the extra time in glass served it well as it seemed a bit closed up initially. Ultimately there was a nice core of citrus fruit with lemon, lime, pear and minerality that that refreshes nicely and seems pretty persistent. Still could use a year or two IMO.

  • 2012 Malvira' Langhe Favorita

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Small taste, serviceable, straightforward, probably got lost in the shuffle. Several mentioned they liked it.

  • 2005 Vodopivec Vitovska Classica Venezia Giulia IGT 90 Points

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT

Kind of an orangish yellow color. VEry small pour. I'll refer you to WIML's note from a few years ago, that seems to hit it pretty well. There was an enjoyable yet unusual character here. I definitely get the sherried aspect, waxy, and some spiciness with citrus and something I can't quite pin down. Odd, but interesting in a good way.

  • 2000 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo Costa Grimaldi 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Very dark red color. PNP, Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Absolutely beautiful and ready for business. Big nose, deep earthy, mushroom, black cherry, raspberry, licorice. The palate is earthy, red and dark red berry fruits, fine grain tannins, perfectly balanced and ready to go. This has got some legs for the road, but you can get into it nicely now.

  • 2000 Paolo Scavino Barolo Carobric 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This had a 90 minute double decant. Very dark red color. An interesting transformation rapidly here; the nose was dominated by dried herbs and dill initially and evolved rapidly to show a nice core of blacker fruits, big and ripe, black plum, black cherry, and tar. The palate is consistent, more modern and bigger than the '00 Einaudi but extremely satisfying. 92+pts.

  • 2003 Sergio Barale Barolo Bussia 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark red color. Two hour decant; drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This glass slipped away very quickly. Very ready with the decant and in a great place. I loved the licorice, dried berries, spice, balsamic and dark berries on the nose to start; the palate is medium bodied with dark berry, black berry liqueur, kirsch, spice, licorice, and a long finish, well balanced. Drink or hold. 92+ to 93pts.

  • 2009 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 2 hours. This was really approachable for being so youthful. Very nice nose with ripe raspberry fruits, briary with dusty tannins that are fairly inviting. This should evolve nicely over the next 3-5 years. 92(+)pts.

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Very dark red color. This was good, big and full, 1hr decant, pretty firm still, but lots of very dark fruits.
