Introduction

Great opportunity to taste through the 2013 Pinot Noir with Thomas Rivers Brown. Great vintage. Timing was fortuitous with the email offer coming out the next day, helping me be an educated customer.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2013 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Tasted at Rivers Marie, this had been opened 2 hours earlier and double decanted. All red fruit with a good spice driven start with lush fruit at the beginning, followed by a burst of energy from middle to finish. Very elegant. Once again in 2013 I find this to be as good a value Pinot Noir as can be found anywhere in the world.

  • 2013 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Gioia Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Tasted at Rivers Marie, this had been opened 2 hours earlier and double decanted. Red and black cherry with subtle spice aromas. Similar flavors with lots of tannins. More firm than I recall from prior vintages. Good length.

  • 2013 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Tasted at Rivers Marie, this had been opened 2 hours earlier and double decanted. Lots of red cherry and berry nicely supported with woodsy and baking spice. Nose and palate identical. Long and well textured throughout. I preferred this over the Summa Old Vine. Tough weather produced ridiculously low yields in 2013, I think TRB said just 4 barrels. This is the style of Pinot Noir I really enjoy and think this will be an excellent wine.

  • 2013 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Summa Old Vines

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Tasted at Rivers Marie, this had been opened 2 hours earlier and double decanted. All red fruit with moderate ripeness and some tart elements. All supported with very good spice. slightly earthy, perhaps slightly subdued vs the "regular" Summa. Elegant and well textured.

  • 2013 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Occidental Ridge Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Tasting at Rivers Marie, this had been opened 2 hours earlier and double decanted. Probably my favorite vintage ever for this wine. Lots of Asian five spice with red and black cherry. I found this fun and delicious, but was told that wasn't the case when first opened. Most of the 2013 Rivers Marie lineup will benefit from serious cellar time, but i think this one is more of mid-term ager, probably best from 2019 or so.

  • 2013 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Tasted at Rivers Marie, this had been opened 2 hours earlier and double decanted. Forward and fatter fruit vs the other cuvees, probably the easiest to enjoy now. Black and red berries with sweet spice. 10% whole cluster. Bit of heat on finish.

  • 2013 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Kanzler Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Tasted at Rivers Marie, this had been opened 2 hours earlier and double decanted. Black cherry and berries with good spice. Also drinking nicely today, this has good balance and textures and a sneaky elegance. 2012 was the first vintage for this wine and I really prefer this cuvee in 2013.
