Fontalloro vertical

First of two Felsina verticals, with Rancia next week.

I cam to it with received wisdom that Fontalloro is the more modern in profile, with sweeter fruit, more evident oak and less capacity to age.

The wines did not show any of this, but rather a very consisten and elegal profile, axed on acidity, tannin, flirts with VA and blasamic notes and a fruit profile tending more towards flowers than round fruit. Impressive capacity to age, with 1995 being the ifrst ready to drink, 1988 only starting to show tertiary aromas, and 1983 on a steady plateau of graceful maturity. way to go!

  very dark; dusty nose with herbal note, very fresh and almost spritzy. Mouth of sweet flowers, red cherry, a lot of tannin and acidity, a bit vegetal. complex but still too young.

• 1998 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro

  very opaque, similar note to the 1999 with a bit more plum. mouth very different, this time on bitter coffee/bay leaf notes, liquorice and some iron filings. seems will last less than 1999 but no hurry.

  nose is more open than previous bottles, a hint of VA, blood, dark fruits. spreads on the palate with plum, flowers, herbal with a bitter/tannic end. best so far.

  good surprise, was not expecting much from this vintage, instead a very elegant wine, juicy with fruit and bay leaf finish. at peak.

  nose slightly corked - still drinkable and lets you see a big wine underneath, but still corked.

  the first to show some tertiary characters with leather, tobacco and balsamic notes, but still very very enjoyable.
