• 2010 Pierre Damoy Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Tamisot

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

  Plum core with good clarity, pale rim; sweet tart red and dark fruit, white rock, floral, young, sour cherry; good sap and depth, snappy but good fat, plum; very good.

• 2006 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Sant' Antimo Fabius

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Sant' Antimo

  Dark core with bricking; cedar, cinnamon, dried cherry and strawberry, sandalwood, glycerin, menthol, some age, dark fruit, dark cherry; fat, no acid, flabby, some alcohol showing, darker fruit along with some cherry, brandy warmth on finish.

• 2010 Domaine Saint-Damien Côtes du Rhône Vieilles Vignes

  France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

  Dark core with thin garnet rim; dark fruit, raspberry, garrigue, raspberry pie, sweet and rich; dark and brooding a bit on the palate, raspberry, classic S. Rhone, baby aspirin, young, a freshness that makes this rich wine seem lighter, some sweet fruit on finish; good but still too young; many called Gigondas on this which I could not dispute.

• 2013 Rust en Vrede Merlot

  South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

  Dark core with reddish purple rim, some clarity; brown sugar, sweet candy, red and purple fruit, sweet and tart, fresh fruit as well as a compote level of concentration, slight green pepper; almost medicinal on the palate, larger scaled but tannins are not harsh, higher alcohol; very young; good.

  Dark core with bricking, fine sediment; tobacco, cherry, dill, menthol, sandalwood, burnt sugar, red cherry; gritty, grainy tannin, dark cherry, sweet then tart and green, modern, cedary wood; good.

• 2005 Patrick Jasmin Côte-Rôtie

  See through crimson with lighter rim; vanilla, guava, cherry, strawberries and cream, slight vegetal note; darker fruit on the palate, rose, tart, cherry pit, meaty, soft and Burgundian; this was good but I've seen lots of bottle variation so far.

• 2010 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

  See through rose; floral, rose, aromatic, sexy, sour meaty cherry, sweet and tart fruit, a somber quality to the back of the nose; that somber quality comes through on the palate, sour cherry, leaner, very Cote de Beaune, very noble; delicious.

Wow, there were a lot of wines that didn't conform to the theme, but I won't get too upset when there is delicious Burgundy at the table.
Of the ones that did conform the Rust en Vrede Merlot may have been the best. The St. Damien was good but under budget. The Scirus, Cote Rotie, and 2 Burgundies were over to way over.
