    PnP. Lots of sulfur and sponti that made this somewhat hard to read. Lime, honeydew, a huge burst of flowers, lots of acid. I liked the nose but it wasn't showing a whole lot on the palate. Likely needed significant air that it didn't get.

    My third experience with this wine in the last six months, and each has been worse than the last; I think this wine is shutting down and needs to sleep. PnP, which didn't help. Lots of sulfur/sponti, some orangey/tropical fruit, sleek earthy/slatey extract, showing a lot of acid and not very expressive. Give this several hours of air, or better yet several years in the cellar.

    Mosel apple, lots of slate, lots of 2010 acid, but the acid presents as integrated and juicy rather than harsh and tart, so that this is just absolutely delicious. There's so much acid that it almost drinks like a feinharb, and the acid conceals the sneaky extract. Pretty darn tasty now but I think there is very good potential here.

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Rich and powerful, with lots of peach and orange marmalade, hints of mint and jasmine and dew, and a just a touch of honeyed botrytis. Amazing concentration for its level, with the sort of densely layered fruit that I usually only expect from grand cru white burgundy. Not exactly racy, but there's good acidity to balance all the material. Not especially Spatlese-y, this is richer and denser than some of the Auslesen on the table, but it's spectacular nonetheless.

    I think there was something wrong with this bottle. Not very expressive aromatically. Loads of sugar on the attack, not much midpalate, turns bitter on the backend. Not at all what I would have expected from this bottling in this year.

    Ah, lovely. Cork broke, so this was decanted, which likely helped. Lovely pure gold color. Honey, apple, meadow, herbal, earthy, complex and integrated with the sweetness and acidity both mellowed by age, turning savory through the finish. Not especially botrytal. Beautiful and the best of the auslesen.

Flight 5 - Old Auslese (1 Note)

  • 1990 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese #5 84 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Pure gold color. Diesely, slightly stalky, volatile, and a bit leathery, with a lot of funky shoe polish/leather flavors. Improves a bit with air, but it's mostly tertiary, there's not a whole lot of fruit left, and it's starting to get short and dry out. Certainly interesting but not especially good, if correct.
