Once again a very good bottle. Vibrant and lively appearance, very light colour for age; nose opens up nicely in the glass, excellent typicity and lovely complexity, hint of nuttiness; elegant but well-rounded palate (seems to have more stuffing than the bottle tasted in July 2013), harmonious, perfectly integrated ripe acidity; very good length. A beautiful wine.
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
A pristine magnum, impeccable provenance. Mature but lively appearance; lovely nose, fresh mushrooms and minerals, no "off" notes, vestiges of fruit, good depth, hint of spice, lively and warm; initially well-balanced palate but starts to disintegrate after a while in the glass, light weight, remarkable freshness goes a bit sharp and metallic with oxygen; decent length. A worthy survivor but one to drink up quickly, even from magnum.
Much more closed on the nose than the 1999, deeper but with a hint of cherry stones, tight Cabernet typicity; structured palate, slender and still tight, needs air to open up, quite austere; good energy and length.
A wine of real beauty, forward, fragrant, charming and elegant, flowers and mulberries, warm and generous, tobacco, almost Margaux in style, warm gravel, at perfect peak, lovely length.
Incredibly youthful and tannic, not in the least typical for Palmer or for Margaux, in fact a classic and tight Pauillac profile, energetic and long. Needs much more time, an amazing 1999 in many ways.
Rich nose, lots of toasty oak, ripe and velvety fruit, "animale", the make-up tries to conceal a certain lack of stuffing and some dryness on the finish. Attractive and mature now but good rather than great. Has dveloped well over the last five years.
Double decanted for two hours. Completely closed, a really profound wine, lead pencil, a magnificent wine but in need of at least a decade more in bottle. Score reflects potential rather than current performance.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Initial whiff of fragrance on the nose, rosehip and quickly separating acidity on the palate, tired but not dead, fresh and juicy, good length, surprisingly good.
Double decanted. A blend of 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier. Very rich, spicy and toasty, opulent and sexy, pure but rich and deep, great typicity, wonderful concentration and elegance, mineral concentration, a magnificent Côte Rôtie. At peak with no end in sight.
Double decanted. 100% Syrah. Very youthful, extremely energetic and concentrated, incredibly pure and powerful but completely closed, fabulous fruit, needs decades, an essence of Côte Rôtie. I could imagine this wine achieving perfection in 10 - 20 years.
Much lighter colour than the previous two and much lighter weight and concentration, drying tannins, has a touch of greenness but there is ripe fruit and pepper too, and length is very good. May need a bit more time.
Good level, perfect provenance. Polished, stately, exotic, balanced and fresh, slender, fully mature, good flavours, good length. Civilised, a grand old lady, wrinkled but bolt upright. Reminded me of the Dowager Countess of Grantham in the tv-series Downton Abbey.
Half bottle. Very oaky, still a bit disjointed, ripe fruit and lots of botrytis, lacks finesse but powerful and concentrated, good length. I am glad to say that, tasting blind, I immediately recognised this, before allowing myself to be confused by my fellow tasters...
