Last week it was Vouvray/Chenin blanc and this week it's a small selection of gems from the Northern Rhone.

Lovely tasting. I thought the Condrieu was very pleasant - but not 115AUD pleasant. So the Cote Rotie or two bottles of the St Joseph.
2012 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Saint-Joseph Saint-Pierre
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph
On the nose spice; ginger, bees wax and muted stone fruit . In the mouth again, there are flavours of sweet spices - especially ginger, then muted stone fruit and slight citrus touches. It's waxy textured and quite broad without being flabby but does have some bitterness on the back of the palate

2012 André Perret Condrieu

On the nose the wine is very floral with almost honeysuckle notes, peach and apricot and slight spice. In the mouth the wines flavours are dominated by slight honeyed apricots and peaches (though the wine is dry) and slight spice is evinced on the medium plus length finish. Beautifully balanced and a joy to drink. Difficult to spit.

2012 Yann Chave Crozes-Hermitage
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
Cream, vanilla candy floss and red berries over earthy notes and muted peppercorns on the nose. In the mouth, though the wine is far more spicy, quite peppery over red rather than black berry fruit. Finishes short with talc textured tannin. Feels kind of worked with the impression of carbonic maceration and other manipulates It's bloody expensive at 50 AUD a bottle.

2011 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Saint-Joseph Les Pierres Seches
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph
Aromas of black berry and pepper, slight crushed rock and earthy notes. In the mouth the wine is juicy with a peppery core dressed by a blackberry jus. Chalky tannins then crash the party but are ably accommodated by the spice and fruit. It's quite simple and quite young but it's also quite nice.

2011 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie

On the nose cream toast, vanilla, ripe black fruit, spice and meaty notes. In the mouth the wine is juicy with initial flavours of liquorice , black pepper then medium plus intensity grippy, chalky textured tannins close everything down except a sweet black fruit core that runs on a rail track from the front of the mouth to the back of the palate on the very long finish. Very young.

2012 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas

On the nose aromas of violets, slight dustiness, bacon fat, crushed rocks and dense black fruit. On the palate more of the same. Fairly hefty tannins and quite broad mouth feel. Needs time to settle down and is quite dumb, for me, at the moment.
