  • 2013 Domaine des Costes Rouges Marcillac Tandem

    France, Southwest France, Marcillac

    Good ruby core with lighter edge. Brambly and smoky smelling. Medium weight, no wood, some violet florality and blackberry jam. Tooth coating tannins. Somewhat underfruited for its structure but not terrible.

  • 2012 Clos La Coutale Cahors

    France, Southwest France, Cahors

    Translucent ruby. Piney nose. Light weight. Supple and herbaceous with black fruit and an interesting twist of blood orange. Quickly falls away through mid-palate and finish. Mediocre.

  • 2012 Domaine Arretxea Irouléguy

    France, Southwest France, Pays Basque, Irouléguy

    Very deep color, almost opaque. Ripe nose leavened by crushed herbs. Light to medium weight with forthcoming entry and good mid-palate intensity. Something very Provencale about this with its black fruit/herb blend. Tight, tannic finish. Probably the best of the 4 red wines for me.

  • 2010 Domaine Berthoumieu Madiran Cuvée Charles de Batz

    France, Southwest France, Madiran

    Now this is inky looking. Oak and blackberry aromatics. Lush entry, blackberry jam, rosemary, and earth. Finish is dominated by astringent wood rather than tannin-not as scary and unapproachable as it appears, but not my cup of tea either.

Closing

This tasting did not convert me, but I found more to like about the modestly priced whites than the reds.
