  • 2005 Viña Aquitania Cabernet Sauvignon Lazuli 89 Points

    Chile, Maipo Valley

    Tasted blind.
    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of vanilla oak, cedarwood, blackberry, blackcurrant, and slight earth. Mocha and some bell peppers with more air. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, 13.5% which strangely felt much higher, velvety medium+ tannins, full body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet blackberry, blackcurrant, coffee, figs. Medium+ finish.
    Good quality clean clinical tasting Cabernet Sauvignon from the New World. Guessed Chile. On the elegant side but lacking in intensity and finish. Probably the lack of intensity contributed to the shift of focus onto the alcohol heat. Drink up, will probably not improve any further.

    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of earth, slight barnyard, herbs, blackberry, and with more air a mix of violets and varnish. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of earth, blackberry, herbs, black tea leaves, and tobacco. Long finish.
    Good quality classic Left Bank Bordeaux. Nice drinking now. Should drink up. Will probably only hold up to 5 years more tops, because the acidity worries me.

    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of toasted vanilla oak, slight earth, cinnamon spice, blackberry, blackcurrant. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol, firm high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of vanilla, cinnamon spice, ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, cassis, and slight earth. Long finish.
    Good quality. Modern style. The fruit extract and oak influence here had me thinking "Michel Rolland style".
    14 years and still not really ready to drink yet. Probably will be better drinking in 5+ years' time.
    Cabernet Sauvignon based blend.

    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of herbs, earth, tobacco, graphite, blackcurrant. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol, grippy medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry, tobacco, graphite, herbs, leather. Long finish.
    Good quality Left Bank Bordeaux. Well-balanced and drinking probably at its peak now. This is as good as it's going to get. Should drink up, but will still hold for another 4-5 years at least.
