Introduction

Private dinner with two guests having birthdays within a day of each other. Host was the chef, with guests bringing wines to contribute.

Flight 1 - The Appetizers (1 Note)

Rustic bread, artisan crackers, and soft cheeses.

  • 2011 Jean-Marc Brocard Petit Chablis 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Petit Chablis

Soft, approachable but with good balancing acidity. Doesn't have the classic Chablis mineral finish, but a well-made wine nonetheless. Always a good buy and a good choice.

Flight 2 - The First Course (1 Note)

Fresh local Spot Prawns, lightly sauteed. The Aligote was a perfect accompaniment.

  • 2012 Domaine Jomain Bourgogne-Aligoté 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté

Sharp, bracing acidity on entry but with good, bright, balancing fruit (mix of citrus and the tropics). Very good food wine; paired beautifully with fresh Spot Prawns. Nice alternative to the usual chardonnay-based Bourgognes.

Flight 3 - The Soup Course (2 Notes)

Warm celery root soup with a creamy texture (no cream, though!). Champagne finished the first course (prawns) and was the entree to the soup. The Chablis followed the Champagne.

  • NV Placere Champagne Les Filantes 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Dense, persistent bead. Marvelous fresh, high-toned citrus-based fruit and nice acidity. Disgorged approximately 2009.

  • 2009 Remoissenet Père et Fils Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Yellow with medium body and viscosity. A somewhat big but clean, round wine with some attractive steeliness in the finish. Reminds me of a good Puligny but with a Chablis end note... good stuff! Went beautifully with a creamy celery root soup.

Flight 4 - The Main Course (1 Note)

Fresh seared Opah with crispy kale (from the wok) and black radish gratin. The Bourgogne paired well because of its combination of fruit and acidity.

Flight 5 - Dessert Course (1 Note)

Just the wine...

  • 2013 Chateau Grand Traverse Late Harvest Riesling 89 Points

    USA, Michigan

Very interesting and enjoyable wine from a Michigan (USA) winery. I did not get "Riesling" from the aroma and flavors, but the wine has a luscious body and a crispness to it that is very attractive. Not cloying, with a racy mouth feel.
