    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges

    Pale. Funky, stemmy aromatics. Dull, devoid of fruit, tannic. There was some debate as to whether this was corked. One way or another, just terrible.

  • 2010 Domaine de Montille Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Saints-Juliens

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges

    Light garnet. Mixed fruit and char. Light to medium weight, caramel, smokiness, good acidity, stemmy and moderately tannic. Lacking fruit and a sense of balance. Completely unimpressive wine from this terrific vintage, and not particularly recognizable as a Nuits.

  • 2009 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Charmois

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges

    Light center. Earthy, perfumed red fruit-this is the first red that smelled like a Pinot. Light weight, elegant feel, especially for an '09. Lovely, pure fruit that is not roasted, excellent thread of soil running through it, fine length. There you have it; this modest lieu dit turned out to be the best wine of the night.

  • 2008 Jérôme Chezeaux Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Pale center, watery rim. Mostly oak aromas. Light weight. Astringently oaky, lean, nothing but acid. A nightmarishly poor 2008 with all the shortcomings of the vintage and none of the strengths.

  • 2007 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Fourches

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges

    Healthy ruby, lighter edge. Some earth and high toned fruit. Light but it has sap and texture that give it a wonderful feel. Smoky red fruit and spice, good finish, more tannin than immediately apparent at first blush. Well done with particularly pleasing texture for an '07.

  • 2006 Sylvain Cathiard Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Light ruby core. Backward black fruit and anise. Fairly full with a spicy oak base. I think there is good material underneath, but who can tell since the wood dominates from stem to stern?
