Introduction

Maria Ponzi was out to share her wines with us.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2013 Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Gris

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Clear color; apple, pear, grain, melon rind, mineral; crisp, grain mineral, red and green apple, long mineral finish; I like that this was much more dry (residual sugar) when compared to other Oregon Pinot Gris on the market.

  • 2012 Ponzi Vineyards Chardonnay Reserve

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Pale yellow, steely; white flowers, apple, butter, crème fraiche; nice caressing mouthfeel, rounded but good focus, great mid palate, almost minerally finish, struck match; good.

  • 2011 Ponzi Vineyards Chardonnay Avellana

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains

Deeper yellow straw with faint green hues; white flowers, poached pear, butter, cream, amplified flavors from the Reserve; very dense mouthfeel, savory, seemed fatter which could have been from the warmer serving temp, nice freshness, tidy finish that hints at lemon; good.

  • 2011 Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Noir Reserve

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

See through dull ruby; fresh sweet dark cherry nose, nice tartness, slight candy, floral, ripe strawberry; leaner palate but great focus and mid palate, seemingly mineral, some structure on finish; should be very good with a couple more years of age.

  • 2012 Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Noir Abetina 2 Block Aurora Vineyard

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Deeper garnet ruby, see through; blast of sweet fruit on the nose, dark cherry and spice, sweet and obviously domestic but good density with a mineral underpinning giving a seriousness to the wine; palate is firm but not hard, more about substance, great balance of sweet and sour cherry, silky texture but could go for many more years in bottle; very good but the price makes me hesitate just a bit.

Closing

The 2012 Tavola Pinot Noir and 2012 Willamette Pinot were also poured, but I was not able to taste.
I like the wines very much overall and think they are doing a great job.
