2007 Produttori Riserva

The Chicago group got together at Langhe Osterio to taste across the 2007 Produttori Riserva lineup. Great opportunity to see the subtle differences across these wines. We were also lucky that they had black truffles at the restaurant...they didn't after our dinner!

• 2008 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili 92 Points

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

  24 hrs of slow-ox preparation. I found the nose a bit reticent but lovely tones of roses could be found. This wine was so clean and elegant. It had a wonderful transparency to it. Really nice now but really potential here in 10+ years.

• 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

  This has a very bright nose of tart red fruits. The palate matches and the tannins are finely integrated. Finished with an acidic lift. Tasted along side the Montefico and Montstefano. I think this is drinking best now but with time the Montestefano will win out.

• 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montefico

  Right now this wine is tightly wound. Fruits are blacker than the Ovello, more black cherry than red. This came across as a bit austere but show better with time.

• 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

  Classic Nebbiolo nose with tar and roses but a nice brown spice note. This has a bit more perfume. This sits on a very solid frame. Shows tons of potential. Interesting alongside the Ovello, as I think this will be the long term winner.

• 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pajè

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

  The nose on this is dark and brooding. Tar is dominant but those roses are lurking in the background. Lots of structure and spice on the body. Grippy tannins on the finish. Like all of these wines still a baby.

• 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota

  Across the Produttori line up this has a distinctly different nose. Lots of mushrooms and loam here. Tannins were well integrated for this age of wine. Quite an enticing wine, more Burgundy than Piedmonte.

• 2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo

  This wine stands out across the riserva lineup and not in the most positive way. It has a very warm nose with lots of rustic spice. More of medium tannins with a shortish finish. "one of these things is not like the other" went through my head when it sat alongside the Muncagotta and the Paje.

  Wow! The nose on this wine is amazing, layered and elegant. Roses, red fruit, spices, perfume, red flowers all working together. Deep palate, everything is integrated. Long, silky finish. WOTN

  Of the riserva lineup, this was the most closed up and yielded very little. The word "tight" shows up three times in my handwritten notes. Very tough to discern much at this point.

  Almost a shame that this ended up in the same flight as the Rabaja. This comes across as more intense and darker fruited with great depth on the palate. Would be fun to pair these to head to head in another 7-10 years.

For me, confirmation that some of the vineyards truly deserve the acclaim (namely Rabaja and Asili). The Muncagotta was also a revelation being the most Burgundian of the lineup.
