Introduction

Wine of the Trip Honors go to: Tie - 03 WH Smith Maritime Pinot and 03 Talley Rincon Pinot, both were outstanding wines.

Flight 1 (15 Notes)

  • 2003 W.H. Smith Pinot Noir Maritime Vineyard 95 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    (2/16/2006)

An unexpected vacation treat, ordered at Roy's on the Big Island of Hawaii, one of 4 bottles in their allocation. Shows the real reason why the true "Sonoma Coast" Maritime Vineyard is very BURGANDIAN. For once I agree with Spectator, this is one of the best Pinots that I have had. Excellent acidity to make it a great food wine (paired with fresh caught Spearfish - yes I caught a 45 pounder that the Chef at Roy's graciously prepared for us). 45 to 60 second finish. A beautiful wine that makes you wish you had a case of this rare wine.

  • 2003 Talley Vineyards Pinot Noir Rincon Vineyard 95 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Arroyo Grande Valley

    (2/19/2006)

One of the best Pinot from the 2003 vintage that I have tasted. A truly excellent wine with a big mouth but great fruit. This is what all Pinots should strive for. An outstanding blend of fruit and earth that make this a wine that makes it a shame that so little is produced.

  • 2001 Rosemount Estate GSM 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

    (2/17/2006)

Very well balanced and integrated wine. A steal for $21. Very jammy with the right amount of oak, makes this a fine effort. The blend of Grenache, Syrah and Movedre creates a very interesting wine that delivers an excellent mouthfeel.

  • 2004 Hartford / Hartford Court Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    (2/7/2006)

Excellent nose of green apple and vanilla. Complex texture provides an interesting mouthfeel for a sub $20 Chardonnay. Very complex and interesting flavors make this one of our favorite Chardonnays. Hartford continues to impress each and every year with this effort.

  • 2003 Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Sonoma County 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

    (2/14/2006)

One of the best value zins around. Huge fruit, moderate tannins and a touch of pepper in this fine effort. Tough to find a better Zin under $20.

  • 2002 Foppiano Petite Sirah 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    (2/9/2006)

Petite sirah is an underappreciated grape. This effort delivers one of the darkest purple wines that I have come across. Good fruit with a big mouth. This is the ultimate Purple Tooth wine. If more producers delivered results like this, Petite Sirah would have many more fans.

  • 2004 Champalou Vouvray 89 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

    (2/5/2006)

Excellent food wine. Ordered at Roy's Waikola, Hawaii. Paired great with Mac Nut crusted Mahi Mahi. Complex minerality and balanced acidity make this an interesting wine. Refreshing.

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

  • 2003 The Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon Hess Select 88 Points

    USA, California, North Coast

    (2/15/2006)

One of the few very good Value Cabs. Delivers a very drinkable wine each and every year. Not the most complex cab but always very drinkable. Good fruit and moderate tannins make this a good everyday red.

  • 2003 Chehalem Pinot Noir Three Vineyard 87 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (2/12/2006)

Alcohol dominates the nose. Would have benefitted from one or two years in the cellar to achieve balance. Warmth of alcohol overpowered some of the deep red fruit. Well made wine that has all of the elements if given time. Most likely better in a year or two.

  • 2004 Columbia Crest Riesling Two Vines 86 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    (2/11/2006)

A very good value for the price. Very good food wine. Not as complex as the German or French Rieslings but still a good effort.
