Vivier Tasting

Introduction

Michael Carpenter of the Redd Collection presented a delightful tasting of six very good-to-great Vivier wines to eight of us today. Overall impression was that these were delicious wines with varietal character and variety enough to please a range of palates. A ding nearly across the board was that the Viviers do tend to show their alcohol.

  • 2014 Vivier Pinot Noir Rosé 89 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Tasted out of the tank. Beautiful light salmon tone and a delightful nose of sweet spring flowers. A touch of alcohol on the finish.

  • 2011 Vivier Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Significant Pinot fruit ricochets well with the big Pinot and white-pepper nose. Bolder than the 2012. Fun with its tad of menthol but a sense of rubbing alcohol slips through on the finish.

  • 2013 Vivier Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 87 Points

    Lots of sweet oak and alcohol on the nose and a fibrous and woodsy-flavored palate. Long bitter tail. A good though disjointed wine but not the caliber of the others in the tasting.

  • 2012 Vivier Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard 93 Points

    Spicy nose with a touch of soy. Ultra appealing attack, then a sweetness comes 3/4 of the way through the experience, finishing long, consistent, and delicious, revealing some booze. 93-94

  • 2013 Vivier Pinot Noir Sun Chase Vineyard 93 Points

    Straight from the tank. Still tannic. More saline features than the 2012 Vivier Gap's Crown we had by its side. Even some funk. Hint of cheddar. Finish offers similar length to the 2012 Gap's Crown but less amplitude and more funk, though it does still sizzle on the tail.

    Ethereal and smooth with dry pinot fruit--if a touch generous with the vanilla. Good value.
