Introduction

The boys got together slightly earlier this year vs most truffle seasons, given the early and great white truffle harvest. 0.55 kg and great, old wine are a nice combination.

  • 1915 Seguin-Manuel Corton 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    Bottle recently left Burgundy, so hadn't moved much during its century-long life. Powerful secondary and tertiary character with lots of sauvage and meatiness throughout. Nobody would have thought it this old. Sensational. I preferred this vs the 1929 Amoureuses, which I thought showed slightly more signs of "embellishment." Thanks, Kevin.

    Also incredibly fresh for a wine its age, this showed remnants of powerful red fruit and good spice. while i thought this showed a sweetness that made me think there was a touch of something other than Pinot Noir included, that hardly detracted from the sensational quality here. Thanks, Kevin.

    Apple and pear with some lemon. At the expected level of maturity for its age. Moderate power for Montrachet, but with some good nuance.

    This has been a very inconsistent wine, but tonight's bottle was probably the best I've had in years. Lots of ripe apple with plenty of stone fruit, particularly on the palate. Intense, long and very powerful.

  • 1994 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet Flawed

    Dark color before it was opened, then darkened two shades further within a couple of minutes. Nothing of interest remained.

    From the same case as another bottle tasted earlier this year, but tonight's bottle was sensational. Ripe character throughout, fresher than I'd expect at its age. Very good power with wonderful combination of fresh fruit and spice and earthy evolution.

  • 1995 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 93 Points

    Open a couple of hours before serving, but not decanted. Reticent aromatic start, but then explosive on palate. Good red fruit with sensational, alluring spice. Great long term potential here.

    Slightly mature red fruit with very good spice throughout. Good balance overall, just slightly firm on finish. This really exceeded my expectations.

    An odd bottle, probably just not where it was tasted in the course of the evening. Seemed more stripped of fruit and not just reserved. Corked?

    Prototypical old Barolo with lots of mature red cherry, floral notes everywhere and licorice notes with some other, more subtle background spice.

  • 1964 Ceretto Barolo Riserva

    We didn't give this enough air before serving. Started very reserved and subdued. Spice, fruit and underbrush character slowly emerged with more air. At first I strongly preferred the Conterno '64, but this wine was better by the final taste.

    Very elegant with great spice as the highlight. Not a powerhouse, but nicely balanced and styled. I preferred this over the Bricco Rocche in the next glass.

    This was more dense and powerful than the Brunate in the next glass, but it also seemed more modern styled, seemingly showing more new oak. While also very pleasurable, it came across as more ripe and not quite as classic or elegant.

    Much like another bottle from a year ago, this is very tasty right now, with even greater long term potential. Intense and very powerful with lots of black and red cherry. Great spice throughout.

    Oddly a little disappointing tonight, this was lush and ripe but came across as slightly one dimensional to me tonight. Maybe it was just late.
