Aleria Restaurant, Athens
Tasted Wednesday, February 18, 2015 by Papies with 481 views
People proposed wines from their cellars and the group ranked them per individuals preference and the top 2 of each participants were opened. Our resident MW sneaked in the 4 blind tatsted wines as a bit of a spicy edge.
Venue was Aleria in Athens (http://www.aleria.gr/en) and it was a very good choice.
1964 Bodegas Franco-Españolas Rioja Excelso - Gran Reserva 94 Points
Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
Not decanted. Still quite a bit of colour, a lot more than expected. Soft wine but very much alive and vibrant. Sweetish core of red fruits , earthy, smoky, roast meats at time. Elegant and pure. A beautiful well aged wine and a beauty to drink. 94
Our 4,000th TN and a wine worthy of the occasion

1995 Domaine Dujac Bonnes Mares 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Opened and served. Raisiny, juicy , well extracted at times felt overdone. Rich, still very much vibrant and firm. Needs time to develop still and is low on the complexity. Firm tannin too but not angular and not harsh. Improved over time in the glass so we would suggest one awaits a few years and if opened now maybe decant for a few hours. 91 for now

1982 Château Montrose 91 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Bready, mushroomy, forest floor well evolved and almost tertiary. On the palate as a contrast is primary, alive, good acidity and full of life! Light on the midpalate though and almost thin at times. Good wine not great though and expected so much more given vintage and producer. That been said we would love it on every occasion. 91-92

2012 M. Chapoutier Crozes-Hermitage Les Meysonniers 89 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
Tasted blind and has been open for more than 2 hours. Fresh, elegant wine, vibrant. No oak. Bright red fruit, well round, good acidity. Thought it was grenache but pure syrah. Very nice and unpretentious wine. Not the most complex but to quote "doesn't have to be".Utterlly enjoyable. 89 but a good 89

2006 François Villard Côte-Rôtie Le Gallet Blanc 93 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Young in many ways, fresh still with a dark colour. Light violet, floral nose. Good rich wine, well balanced. Pure and elegant wine, the way Cote Rotie should be, nice to see it un-adukterated by oak and extractio. Still young and with Potential. 92-93 for now but will improve

2009 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis 90 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Tasted Blind and was opened a good 2 hours before. Syrah for sure & mocha nose, smoky, roast meat, young wine still almost with an 09 bdx style of being approachable young. Mocha on palate too. Well extracted and need its time to shed its puppy fat (hopefully) but this is not yet there. Good wine still shame on the mocha side which dominates at this stage. 90

2011 Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape 86 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Tasted Blind and was opened a good hour before.
Thought it was new world pinot...Quite a visible alcohol too. Not very characteristic, rich fruit, grenache in a way. Not impressive definitely puzzling and humbling to try blind.... 86

1999 Casa Ferreirinha Douro Barca Velha 89 Points
Portugal, Douro
Is this really it? Such a famous and pricey wine and that all? Well round and still fresh, light violet nose. Lacks any sense of magic. Complexity and length have left the building. Such a dissapointment. 89

1996 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 93 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Second time we cross paths with this wine ( Last was Sep/09 Papies 95) and this time felt a touch less impressive and retrained. Very much a young wine and still needs tiem to develop (Maybe we were star gazing back then)
Still quite a bit of oak dynamics, mocha on the nose and palate. Good extract but the wine is still very young and undeveloped ina way but not harsh or angular. Needs time. Note sure how to rate. But above 92 and hopefully time will help.

1989 Egon Müller/Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese Flawed
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Bad mouldy cork which inhibited the nose of the wine and destroyed the experience. The palate felt great though. Shame!

NV José Maria da Fonseca Moscatel de Setúbal Trilogia
Portugal, Península de Setúbal, Moscatel de Setúbal
Came at the end of a long flight of wines and palate fatique took the best of us. Certainly not as impressive as when we had it last 5yrs ago (Papies - 97) and gladly we have one more bottle to retest. Will not rate this time but did not feel more than a 91..
