Introduction

A tasting of 2 brands from the same vineyards. Hahn SLH is a blend of vineyards (Chardonnay is all Lone Oak Vineyard) & Lucienne is the higher end single vineyard examples of Hahn's vineyards in the SLH. This was Lucienne's rollout tasting for GA.

  • 2013 Hahn Chardonnay SLH Estate Vineyard

    USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

    Pale color; fainter nose, cool, crisp, lime, lemon, poached pear, only slight vanilla; palate shows great acidity and focus finishing with some richness, medium body; food friendly, could stand out for me in the sea of mediocre Chards at this price point.

  • 2012 Lucienne Pinot Noir Smith Vineyard

    USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

    Darker ruby to rim; smoky dark cherry, blackberry, touching on currant, not candied; fuller mouthfeel, spicy, tangy dark cherry, juicy, clove, higher alcohol but good harmony and freshness.

  • 2012 Lucienne Pinot Noir Doctor's Vineyard

    USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

    Duller crimson ruby; some high toned riper but more red fruit than the Smith, sour cherry, red apple skin, plum, ripe strawberry, vanilla; very much center red in the spectrum, a bit more muscle on the palate than nose suggests which is reminiscent of Pommard, floral finish, cranberry; good.

  • 2012 Lucienne Pinot Noir Lone Oak Vineyard

    USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

    Lightest extraction and more of a dull crimson hue; sour cherry, lighter, floral, dried strawberry, tea, minerality?; weightiest mid palate of all 3, viscous, silkier tannin, cherry, strawberry, floral, not candied, very sappy, slight medicinal quality that is intriguing; very good.

Closing

All of the wines were very well made and though Lucienne wines are not inexpensive they are probably better values than many of the higher end examples coming from the AVA.
