Introduction

Really great to have Bob over to our place at last, and to get to meet Mary. And always great to spend time with Mikhail and Sveta, of course! The dinner was originally planned rather amorphously, but the stars came together to make this an italian sort of feast, with an italian lamb stew and pasta, and a short flight of Amarones. Interestingly, they all came across to me as quite different in style (they could hardly get more different than the Bertani and Trabucchi) but of similar overall quality -- it was hard picking favorites. Thanks to Bob as well for the elegant aperitif wine.

As always, the guests make the event. Hope to do it again soon.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

This wine we had with a lineup of four great cheeses brought by Bob -- I'm not going to remember all the names, but Taleggio and Morbier are two of my long-time favorites.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

With dinner, the lineup of three Amarones:

  • 1998 Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 91 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

Medium ruby color. Complex nose of vanilla, tobacco, tart black cherry and dusty, spicy earthiness. Definitely an italian profile, with some age. On the palate this is nicely balanced with some dry tannin.

  • 2002 Trabucchi d'Illasi Amarone della Valpolicella 90 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella

Deep ruby color. Big, floral nose, very perfumy, with a heavy dose of primary grapey fruit aromas. The fruit is a little awkward at this stage, and this pretty clearly needs a few more years of cellaring. Also some background dust and smoke. After a couple of hours of air, peppery notes as well -- this was a wine where the last sip was the best. On the palate it's full bodied and silky with a touch of cedar and a touch of sweetness to balance the bitter edge.

  • 2000 Michele Castellani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Ca del Pipa Monte Cristi 91 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

Deep ruby color. This is the only one of the three Amarones we had that really showed the expected Amarone profile, with aromas of tobacco, raisins and spice. Still quite youthful but coming into its own. On the palate very nice balance, full bodied with a touch of sweet raisin flavor. Very nice.

Closing

Dessert was a really wonderful cinnamon/apple coffee-cake that Mikhail and Sveta cooked up and brought over. Delicious stuff, and went perfectly with Grappa.

Cheers!
