Ben's 50th b'day. A few people and lots of lovely wines. I had a bit of a head cold so my notes aren't as good as they should be but I did my best with what I had.
matched with twice cooked goats cheese soufflé. For me none of the wines really worked with the soufflé, though the food was lovely. The Javillier and the Vacqueyras were the winners for me.
matched with chateaubriand. In the end the wines were divided into three sub brackets of three wines each. Of this lot the Beaucastel was probably my favourite. The Grange and the La Chapelle still needed a bit of time for my liking (yes, I know the Grange is a 1990 but it came across as relatively young). The Coriole, Seppelt and Penfolds St Henri were very nice Australian Shiraz with a bit of age. The Dom de Vieille Julienne was also pleasant.
What a lovely day, despite my relative illness. Some great wines to enjoy with some lovely company. Wonderful
2009 Domaine Patrick Javillier Meursault Tête de Murgers Cuvée
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Aromas of stone fruit, biscuit, very slight butter. In the mouth more stone fruit, the wine is juicy, slight marzipan and butter notes. Lovely

2011 Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis
France, Burgundy, Chablis
Medium minus intensity aromas of citrus - lemon more specifically, some green apple and cream noes. In the mouth more of the same, it's quite simple but it's also quite elegant and pleasant - good balance.

1998 Penfolds Chardonnay Reserve Bin 98A
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
slight oxidised notes on the nose, cream, butter and toast, with vanilla notes, over mutes citrus fruit and honeyed notes. On the palate the wine has spice, toasted almonds, butter, honey and slight citrus notes. A little flat for me

2009 Domaine le Sang des Cailloux Vacqueyras Un Sang Blanc
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vacqueyras
aromas of crushed walnuts and slight figs, slight oxidised handling. Flavours of figs, walnuts and honey and, despite lacking acidity, the wine is quite fresh. Very nice.
