Flight 1 - Champagnes to Start (2 Notes)

  • 1996 A. Margaine Champagne Blanc de Blancs Special Club

    France, Champagne

    Small pour of this. Very nice BdB. Green apple, lemon, doughy, chalky, drinks very clean. Not much tertiary development, still seems young for a 96.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Brut Rosé

    France, Champagne

    Disgorged 25 October 2011. A little funky, touch of reduction? Orange/grapefruit citrus, light red berries, very earthy, very light bubbles, a vinous style of rose. Doesn't make much palate impact but then has sneaky, extraordinary length. Very interesting wine that I had trouble fully understanding.

Flight 2 - Dauvissat Forests (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    Really good and very fresh, with zippy acidity and lots of Chablis mineral character. Preferred this slightly to the 09 Forest alongside.

  • 2008 Dauvissat-Camus Chablis 1er Cru La Forest

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    Served next to the 04, I slightly preferred the 04. This is richer and riper and denser, very brothy and savory, touch of honey, the mineral edge is there but this is less racy and classic. Quite developed actually,I don't see this making old bones and if this bottle is representative this is not a wine I would hold for the long haul.

Flight 3 - More Champagne and Puligny (2 Notes)

  • 1989 Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses

    France, Champagne

    Very pretty. Mature soft baked apple pastry, some mushroom, touch of white chocolate and earth. Has reached that nice old champagne stage where the structure has mellowed and integrated. Lovely champagne, even if I'm not quite moved by it.

  • 2009 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

    A very nice Puligny. Ripe orchard fruit, nice Puligny floral character, not exactly racy but enough acidity to balance the ripeness of the vintage and a just a kiss of minerals on the back end. Delicious.

Flight 4 - Older Reds (2 Notes)

  • 1998 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Very Nuitsy, with dark fruit and earth and iron. Has just a trace of 98 bitterness, but the tannins are well integrated and not drying. Shows less Vosne spice character than this vineyard sometimes does, and not as elegant as M-G wines can be, but still good. I'm not a big fan of the 98 vintage character, but I liked this.

  • 1993 Hubert Lignier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    Really lovely mature nose, with dark plummy fruit (showing the vineyard's Morey proximity) and lots of forest and earth and tea, almost an old woody character. Fully integrated and mature, structure is mostly resolved. Outshone a bit by what came after but I really liked this.

Flight 5 - More Older Reds (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Domaine Dujac Clos Saint-Denis

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru

    Very ripe plummy fruit, quite ripe for the vintage, with lots minty and spicy stem character and a light vanilla edge from the oak. Very Dujac. The nose is extremely expressive and absolutely wonderful. Still very young on the palate, medium bodied, the oak and the structure have not quite integrated yet and the tannins are a touch chalky. Very, very good now but needs more time in bottle, this may have been just a bit shutdown. Not nearly as mature or texturally refined at this stage as a recent 2000.

  • 1990 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Really quite lovely. Certainly very ripe, with sweet, concentrated blackberry fruit, but without the overripe roasted quality that many wines have in this vintage. Rich and powerful but not heavy. Not super complex, but still excellent.

Flight 6 - 2x Rousseau Clos de la Roche (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Clos de la Roche

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Poured next to the 99, and both were outstanding, and quite similar. Super pure, ripe raspberries and spice, with the 02 just a little riper and fresher and the 99 a tad redder in character and more integrated. But they were clearly variations on the same theme, and both have an incredible textural refinement with lush, super-silky tannins. Both were an absolute joy and my co-WOTNs.

    Poured next to the 02, and both were outstanding, and quite similar. Flight 7 - Chambertin and Corton (3 Notes)

  • 1990 Domaine Maillard Père & Fils Corton-Renardes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    I was getting fatigued at this point, and wasn't able to give this much attention or get much of a read on it as I was focusing more on other wines. But I noted a red-fruit aspect that is unusual in 90s and was surprised at its freshness.

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    Slow-oxed about four hours. Fresh and nowhere near mature. Refined red fruit, medium weight, good midpalate sap, underlying earthy character, some chalky tannins and high 96 acidity. A really good wine that doesn't quite have the textural refinement of a high-end grand cru (yet?) and needs some more time to resolve the structure.

  • 1988 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    At first, quite special, with mature, wonderful red fruit and lots of tertiary nuance, in a rich but totally integrated package. But with air the fruit faded and it picked up a slightly roasted quality. Someone referenced a coffee flavor and that made sense to me. It still kept the richness and textural distinction but as the flavor profile lost its fruit it started to seem slightly over the hill. Still an excellent wine, but this bottle was perhaps not quite hitting the heights that this wine is known for.

Flight 8 - Dessert (1 Note)

  • NV Jean-François Ganevat Macvin du Jura Vieux

    France, Jura, Macvin du Jura

    Just had a small taste of this at the end of the night. Weird stuff. Very volatiley/plastic-y, very oxidative, yellow fruit, the fortification shows some, but it didn't show much sweetness to me. I didn't especially like this but it did go well with a bite of cheese.
