Introduction
The Corton Charlemagne was excellent, along with the Niepoort port. All the other wines showed very well with the Trevallon being the most easily drinkable. The Poggio Antico still had a rusticity that came across as maybe corked (though not at all, since all three bottles have had the same musticity). The Peby Faugeres was still young.

Light golden color; aromatic nose with buttery, oily, white fruits, lemon zest; palate is full bodied but immensely fresh, great acidity throughout, flavorful with some fruit, citrus zest throughout, persistence falls just slightly through midpalate; finish is medium length but fades faster than I expect it to. This is an excellent white burgundy with great balance, complexity, fabulous acidity, lacking only slight persistence through the finish. Drink now or in the next few years, this one won't fall off a cliff unless it oxidizes. 93-94

Medium ruby color with age-appropriate bricking; nose has a lot of funk, very similar to previous bottles which I thought might be flawed... It's just the style and blows off after a while, underlying red fruit, some spice; palate is medium bodied, nice acidity, red fruit, clean; finish is medium length. Despite the initial funkiness, very nice. 86-88

Medium ruby color with significant bricking; roasted bell pepper, spice, forest floor; palate is full bodied, well integrated, structured tannins, lots of fruit, very nice; finish is medium length. Very nice, but not as good as the 98. 90

Deep ruby with little bricking; nose has medium intensity, good complexity, some secondary notes with tobacco, red fruit; palate is full bodied, still prevalent tannins, slightly drying, some black fruit; medium length finish. In maturity but wth time ahead, balanced and good but will never be superb. 91
Opens up nicely on both the nose and palate with 30 minutes decanting. Wait 2 years before my next bottle. Very nice. 91-92

From 375. Red fruit, cherry, slightly shrill and acidic on the nose; palate is medium-full bodied, lacks density, tannins are reasonably well integrated, lacks flavor through the midpalate; finish is short. Budget bordeaux, but not much more. Drink up. My last bottle. 82-84

1997 Niepoort Porto Vintage 96 Points

Decanted tonight for a party tomorrow night, and so I tried a bit; color is deep ruby, concentrated, inky with no bricking and very youthful; nose has plums, spice, slight heat, seems very youthful and reticent, primary; palate is full bodied, superb acidity right from the start, fabulous concentration of youthful black cherry and plum fruit, figs, tannins are surprisingly well integrated and smooth, overall mouthfeel is fresh, fruity, and integrated without any heat; finish is medium length but still fades off quicker than I expected it to. At age 18, this is youthful but approachable, great concentration of fruit, balanced, and very promising especially for the $50 release price. This is a 50 year wine. 93+
Day 2: very aromatic, huge improvement from yesterday, a lot more complexity, secondary notes, coffee, caramel; great density of fruit, plums, figs, fabulous acidity; finish is now long. This is much better than yesterday. 94-96
