A tasting of south African wines
2010 Klein Constantia Sauvignon Blanc Perdeblokke 90 Points
South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia
12 months lees, 12 months in the bottle
The nose is clean, intensity is med+, green character at first, lime skin, stone fruit, flinty, ripeness with yeasty notes, fresh, youthful.
The palate is utterly strange, starts off green, almost NZ like, body med+ with high intensity, high acidity, stone fruit with lime skin, tropical fruit, mineral, fresh, high notes of acidic fruit, freshly cut green apple, med+ finish.
Outstanding quality, drinking now but could. fantastic wine

2010 Klein Constantia Marlbrook 93 Points

CF 15%, Malbec 36%, Merlot 14%, Shiraz 14%, Petit Verdot 12%,CS 9%.
16 months in 60% new oak, varieties vinified separately
The wine shows a clear deep purple color.
The nose is clean, med+ to high intensity, dense red and black fruit, oak notes, cinnamon and nutmeg, cranberry, black fruit jam, tobacco, sweet overall character, a hint of alcohol, youthful.
The wine is dry, body and intensity, alcohol (14.5%) and acidity all scoring med+, tannins are round and velvety, balanced, black and red fruit, ripe profile, nutmeg and cinnamon, almost jammy, there are a few stalky notes here and there but contributing to freshness, roasted nuts, clove and white pepper in the med/med+ finish.
Outstanding quality, drinking now but could hold.

2013 Sadie Family Chenin Blanc Skurfberg 91 Points

The nose is clean, medium intensity, ripe fruit in the back, wet wool, ripe stone fruit, tin pineapple, light green notes with lime (zest and juice), white flowers, youthful, a bit closed.
The wine is dry, body and intensity are med+, the acidity is med+ and alcohol is med, balanced with refreshing acidity, ripe stone and citrus fruit, tin pineapple, oak derived notes, almond and walnut with steely minerality, med finish, ripeness and youth in the same time.
Outstanding quality, a bit fresh though and needs time in the glass as with time it was altering to a more ripe/oaky character.

Chenin blanc and palomino
The nose is clean, medium intensity, there is a roundness when compared to Skurfberg, wet wool again and tin pineapple notes, ripe pear and stone fruit, ripe green apple, youthful and feels sweeter.
The wine is dry, body is med/med+ and so is the intensity, the acidity is med+ but well covered by ripeness of fruit, green and stalky notes alongside the ripe lime, steely again in the med finish.
Outstanding quality, great in its own right, drink now or hold. Table preferences split between this and Skurferg.

Clear color med ruby.
The nose is clean, med+ intensity, very dense fruit, black berry, full fruity, gamey, sweet oak notes, tobacco, roasted almond, walnut, overripe fruit, prune, blackcherry, almost jammy, sweet spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, youthful.
The wine is dry, med+ body and med intensity, the alcohol is med (14%) but shows more, red and black fruit, cinnamon and nutmeg, tannins a bit harsh still, balanced overall though, some vegetal notes, caramel and sweet red fruit in the med+ finish.
Outstanding quality, drink now if you wish but could hold.

Tinta barocca
The nose is almost clean, med+ intensity, balsamic notes, clove and brett notes, milky nuance, oak in the back, redcurrant, overripe strawberry, sultana raisin, dried cranberry, thyme, olive, prunes, vanilla from the oak, youthful.
The wine is dry, med body and intensity, med alcohol (13%) and acidity, tannins are medium, dried red fruits, prune, thyme, olive oil with sundried tomato, ripe pomegranate, balanced overall and med finish.
Very good quality, drinking now or hold.

Pinot noir & chardonnay 24 months
The nose is clean, intensity is med/med+, yeast notes, lime and lemon, citrus, dried and sugar coated pineapple, green apple, youthful.
The wine is dry, body is medium, intensity, is med+, acidity is high with medium alcohol, carbonation a bit too much, citrus, lime, lemon, fresh overall, pineapple juice, balanced, med/med+ finish, a bit thin in the midpalate.
Very good palate, drink now but could hold.
