Flight 1 - A Mix of Whites (5 Notes)

  • 2013 Dr. F. Weins-Prüm Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    I’ve had this a couple times and it's a go-to kabinett for me. Tonight it didn’t dazzle anyone but represents its category well. Medium-sweet flavor profile of apple and pie crust. The aromatics change over time and improve as it warms, with tropical fruits and fresh apple as highlights.

  • 2012 Domaine de la Taille aux Loups Vouvray Sec Les Caburoches 93 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

    One of the best vouvrays I’ve had – crisp and mineral-driven but with good fruit character to round it out and make it universally appealing. Lots of things going on – chamonille, ginger, citrus pith and accents of baking spices.

  • 2009 Frantz Saumon Montlouis-sur-Loire Le Clos du Chêne 87 Points

    The biggest dud among the whites – not sure what this was trying to be … some of these chenins have a sweetish character that is attractive and others have a bracing acidity but this was sort of in the middle and thus didn’t really achieve anything. Lemon, almond and herbs in the profile.

  • 2003 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 88 Points

    I'm not very experienced with sauternes, but this seemed a bit harsher and more metallic than some others I've enjoyed in the past. Picked up apples and toasted pecans on the nose and the concentrated, sweet and ripe palate showed marmalade and candied ginger.

  • NV Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Cuvée No. 737 Extra-Brut 95 Points

    France, Champagne

    Absolutely loved this wine – slightly bready aromatics that I adore, decent but not overdone bubbles, delicious flavors of lemon zest, grapefruit and peach pit that alternate between sweet, semi-sweet and bittersweet. Long finish – it keeps bringing you back for more.

Flight 2 - Big California Reds (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Impressive showing and liked my sips of this one, but perhaps due to its rep it disappeared rather quickly and I didn’t spend a lot of time with it. Rich and layered with bold flavors and aromas of ripe blueberry and wild berries accented by spice and espresso.

  • 2010 Saxum Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

    Along with the KB, this got sucked down pretty fast – full-bodied, rich and deep, but also fairly lively with characteristics of black raspberry accented with sophisticated notes of flowers and meats.

Flight 3 - Smooth Italian Reds (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points

    Disappointing for its ordinariness – recent chianti classicos have given me more oomph for a smaller entry fee –clean with dark red fruits but not enough tannic structure or sophisticated flavors or aromatics.

  • 2009 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto Toscana IGT 91 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    Very good and quaffable supertuscan that I wouldn’t hesitate to buy again or recommend, but it’s also quite international and not particulatly interesting or thought-provoking. Elegant and warm with a profile of black fruits and oak.

  • 2001 Calabretta Etna Rosso 93 Points

    Very classic etna, resembling a burgundian pinot noir with some Italian spiciness layered in. Nose of strawberry and tamarind with a light-bodied but deep flavor profile of cherry and raspberry with sophisticated oak accents. Yet another party where I turned people onto Sicilian wine. Was WOTN for some of the more sophisticated palates.

Flight 4 - Aged French Reds (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Delas Frères Côte-Rôtie Seigneur de Maugiron 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    A bit of a dud like the brunello – had fine bones and may have been a bit closed, but no one was reaching for refills from this bottle. Reticent nose with a green olive character and an austere palate showing some garrigue, with hint of raspberry fruit and caramel.

  • 2003 Château Clerc Milon 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    These ’03s keeping singing for me (and caused me to reload on WineBid and elsewhere) – still fresh and primary with the typical Napa meets Bordeaux thing you get from this vintage – aromas of flowers and cassis with berry flavors accented by fresh herbs. Delicious and interesting.
