Introduction

Dinner with Kenn and some coursemates. A special Cabernet Sauvignon from Penedes that Kenn had hand carried back from Spain.

  • 2006 Bodegas y Viñedos del Contino Rioja Contino Reserva 89 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja

    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of vanilla, balsamic, red plums. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, medium acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of vanilla, sweet baking spice, red plums, ripe cherry, and leather with more air. Medium+ finish.
    Good quality Rioja. Classic taste, drinkable but nothing special here. May develop and improve more over the next 5 years.

  • 1996 Mascaro Cabernet Sauvignon Anima Gran Reserva 92 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

    Tasted blind. Aired in bottle. Drank over 3 hours.
    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of vanilla, sweet spice, red plums, dark red cherries, and with more air - dried red fruit, cigarbox, tobacco, leather. Vanilla receded after 2 hours. Green bell peppers only after 2.5 hours. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, smooth fine medium tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of vanilla, spice, red plums, dark red cherries, dried fruit, leather, and finally some green bell pepper. Medium+ finish.
    Very good quality. One of the most interesting Cabernet Sauvignons I have tasted before, and from Penedes which is a region from which I hardly drink. A learning point that Cabernet Sauvignon can express red fruited character too. I don't think this is a case of underripeness as the green bell pepper was slight and just added a touch of complexity and clue to its grape varietal identity. Tannins are nicely integrated but this wine is still holding strong. Could last well for another 6-8 years if the poor quality cork survives.

  • 2004 Domaine de la Borde Arbois Pupillin Vin Jaune 93 Points

    France, Jura, Arbois Pupillin

    Slow-oxed in bottle for about an hour before drinking.
    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, yellow gold colour. Legs.
    Nose pronounced intensity, with aromas of sherry-like oxidative nuttiness, sea salt minerality, dried orange peel, dried apricots, and preserved fruits. Developing. Quite an acquired smell. Not everyone could appreciate this.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of nuttiness, salty minerality, dried orange peel, dried apricots. Long finish.
    Very good quality. An intense Vin Jaune expressing itself as it should. I must say again that this smells like a Fino Sherry, but is a lot easier and smoother on the palate. A long life ahead.
