Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1996 Giacomo Brezza e Figli Barolo Cannubi

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Blood, bricking slightly. At first a big hit of fertilizer on the nose, then that mellowed revealing cherry, shoyu, chocolate, coffee, mint, and classic roses. The palate is big, tannic and brawny; shoyu, blood/iron, bitter chocolate; masculine and still tight. Good finish. This needs time. Really a nice wine. I'd like to have a case of this! (My wine)

  • 1973 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Pretty dark; bricked blood. This nose is absolutely ethereal -- leather, horse sweat, roses, cocoa powder, peanut butter (?), antique wooden furniture, saline meat broth -- it just goes on and on. Wow! The palate is a little less intense; good herbs, lovely sweet cherry, and a fair bit of tannic structure and acidity. This bottle, at least, has years and years of improvement ahead of it (or did, before we gleefully and lovingly drank it). Fantastic, detailed finish. A great treat! (Thanks, Josh!)
