Introduction

while it's always nice to visit Orna Chillag's winery at Yehud, this time I felt more impressed than in previous times.
the mature VIVO & SOLO wines were of higher quality than in previous tasting events, IMHO, as well as the two impressing top-end GSM and the 15 years edition Amarone-style wine.

  • 2013 Chillag Winery Chenin Blanc Mitspeh Ramon 89 Points

    Israel, Negev

    light-pale yellowish colour
    unique arma of ripe apricot & wet hay
    full-bodied, mouth filling, ripe dry-fruits & wet-hay flavours, very good harmony, good acidity level, pleasant finish.
    Enjoyable wine for food, especially for quiche & light meat.

    fresh fine ripe fruity aroma
    full-bodied, firm tannins, good acidity level, ripe fruity flavours, pleasant character, surprisingly still feels quite young, ready to drink now.

    made from 50% CS, 30% Syrah , 20% Merlot
    tart ripe aroma, quite unusual for this blend, but unique
    med-bodied, integrated tannins, ripe fruity flavours, ready to drink now, an enjoyable wine for food.

  • 2009 Chillag Winery Cabernet Sauvignon 15 YEARS EDITION Ben Zimra 92 Points

    Israel, Galilee, Upper Galilee

    Hand Made wine - only 278 bottles made from CS grapes, of which 10% were dried till becoming raisins, and 5% were late-harvested, which gives this wine some resemblance to Amarone. Aged 3 years in French oak barrels, then in the bottle. 15.3% abv.

    full-bodied, firm tannins, good acidity level, rich, powerful, unique, mouth filling, a real master-piece for the lovers of this genre. No doubt Orna Chillag made a special effort here - and she deserves all the credit for this special Israeli Amarone-like wine.

    a unique rosé made from Nebbiolo grapes from a norther vineyard, fermented in inox tanks, 12% abv
    lively rosé colour
    pleasant fruity-floral aromas
    semi-sweet juicy, tasty, good acidity, raspberry flavours, very good harmony, enjoyable fruity-sweet finish.

Closing

Chillag wines, especially those that I tasted, seem to be better positioned when presented at this mature stage of their lives.
