With no plans for a Saturday night Tommy O' and I decided to grab dinner. We made a quick reservation and planned to meet at a favourite french bistro. Well it never occured to us that it was Valentine's on Monday and so lots of people were there for their Valentine's dinner. Well good thing were both secure in our manhood LOL.
We both brought a bottle, mine was the Beaucastel and T's the Spottswoode.
2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Since I have a rather large stash of this I decided to commit infanticide tonight for a dinner out. I opended and decanted the wine for one hour prior to leaving for the restaurant. The color was a deep dark black/purple that was inpenetrable. The nose was initally muted but over the course of the hour I could begin to smell it from my dining room. The nose was big with hints of smoke, ashpalt and spices, but you could tell that it was still muted. From the first sip you knew that this was not going to give much, but the structure was there and nothing was disjointed just closed. No real harshness at all and the tannins were very fine and well integrated. It would be an understatement to say this is a big full bodied wine. I won't be opening another one for 10+ years, but oh momma what this will be then.

1997 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley
We did not decant this, just pop and pour. The nose classic California Cab with lots of fruit and a hint of cedar. This was the polar opposite of the '01 Hommage A Jacques Perrin we also had. Was quite closed at first but over the course of the evening it began to open up showing black fruits and hints of minerals and spice. It was a full bodied wine with an adequate finish. My impressions are it is a good not great wine. Nice to drink while we waited on the Hommage.
